I was lucky to go to school in Athens right as the scene was peaking: R.E.M. was huge, The B-52’s returned to play homecoming in the field next to my dorm, and the scene was littered with cool bands you never heard (but should have).
A standout was The Trenchcoat Club, and I don’t say that because we knew the dudes. They perfectly bridged the gap between genius and a train wreck.
Just found a playlist of their first/only album/cassette. Good stuff. Well, good stuff to me and my brother.
A sample:
Additional standout tracks:
Save the Ants
Theme From Knight Rider
Throwing a Chair
Sellout Song ’89
But, really, it’s all genius.

Alas, so much genius goes underappreciated and unrecognized, but I'm not sure that applies here.
Corey Smith is from Athens. I used to listen to him quite a bit.
Drive-By Truckers was based in Athens. I used to really love their work (best) until they decided to create deliberately political music (worst).
Let me know when we're discussing all the 70's Southern Rock bands out of Basically Jacksonville or Florida in general.
Sorry, I just can't go for R.E.M. Ugh.
I'll take the B-52s all day, every day. Besides, I'm a sucker for red heads.

Google's list of Athens bands does not include "Flat Duo Jets" which is an absolute travesty.
Currently listening to Servotron for an Athens fix
Danny Boone count as being from Athens? Rehab and all the hick hop that's followed them has been pretty great, especially the crews from Jones county.

While they played Athens a lot, can you argue that really they were from North Carolina?

In reply to David S. Wallens :
I suppose so. But they were in this so I just assumed
I wonder what happened to my copy of that?
Please restate the question. There is no "Best"...
