Just saw it, and was not disappointed. I'm also glad that I'm not the only one that thought Kylo was Marrilyn Manson

It possible that Fin is distantly related to Windoo, or that the Force just chose him. IIRC, Jedi powers don't always come from family inheritance.

Speaking of family inheritance, I am disappointed that Leah had no Jedi training, that would have opened up some great possibilities in the story line.

The planet that they found Luke on is very unlikely to be Degobah, they said Luke left in search of the first Jedi Temple, I wonder if he found it?

Over all I feel that this is easily the best in the franchise since The Empire Stikes Back. Much better acting than the prequels (OK, Christian Hadenson's performance was the only realy bad one, but it dragged the whole series down), and no saccharin like Ewoks or JarJar.

I'm also not terribly bothered by the repeating themes, as history does in fact repeat itself. Now if episode VIII turns out to be a repeat of, or inversion of episode V, I might be disappointed.

What is it with Skywalkers and hanging out on E36 M3ty desert planets?

Glad they finally included a droid who doesn't slow everyone down.
Question though, the scene where BB deploys his lighter...
Thumbs up or flipping the bird?
I say the former, roomie says the latter.

Just saw it, was quite entertained. I didn't think that the actors were the greatest but I think that they've got three years to mature into their roles.

Good to see the humor is back into snappy one-liners and not hung on the vaporous shoulders of computer-generated buffoonery. I can't say I'm a big fan of the literal big guy yet, as every scene with him felt clipped from Prometheus instead of part of Star Wars...

Just saw it today. All in all I liked it.

The "big guy" isn't necessarily big -- it's a hologram and Palpatine used a giant projection when he talked to Vader in ESB, so it's probably part of the standard Sith protocol for use in cowing underlings.

While it initially looks like the Empire/FO got stuck on building super weapons with major weaknesses, that's actually only really true for the first one in ANH. The second death star wasn't finished, once the rebels knocked the shields down (which only happened because the Emperor was overconfident and let the strike team onto the forest moon as part of his trap) they actually flew INSIDE it and shot torpedoes into the main reactor. Hit the reactor and you get a big explosion is pretty much a standard trope for SF of any kind. For the Star Killer, the X-wings were ineffective against it until Han & Chewie's bombs blew a hole in the armor for them to shoot through, and then they blew up the "resonator" (the magic thingey that held all the power from the sun, so effectively the same as the reactor).

The real question in the blow-up-the-superweapon plot is why only the Millennium Falcon can fly through a shield in hyperdrive, and why they couldn't just fly the X-wings in the same way? OTOH, we've consistently seen it do things that make no sense (it's a freighter, even if Han has hopped it up how does it outmaneuver dedicated one-man space superiority fighters?), so perhaps we just have to accept that it's a magic ship.

The guy who was buying the scrap on Jakku was the "owner" of the Falcon, it wasn't abandoned. Rey says it hasn't flown in years, but that doesn't mean the scrap dealer (whose name I've forgotten) wasn't keeping it up. Maybe that's why he was buying all the scrap? :)

Rey being able to open any door on the ship by manipulating fuses the size of a fist doesn't make a lot of sense, but then neither did the fact that in ep 4-6 everyone leaves computer ports hanging open for passing droids to plug into and do whatever they want to the computer system. I mean, seriously, hasn't anyone in that universe heard of network security?

And yeah, I get the impression that what happened is that the Rebellion turned into the Republic and split the territory of the former Empire between them and the FO, while the Resistance is in effect, a "new rebellion" inside the FO territory. Gotta remember that they threw out all of the canon from everything post-RotJ, so the idea that the Empire collapsed after Palpatine's death and was quickly replaced by the Republic isn't necessarily still valid.

I have to say, though, at the end it's a good thing Rey and Finn were fighting Darth Emo (as I've heard him called), rather than Vader. Vader would have mopped the floor with them.

Network security? They haven't even heard of GUARDRAILS.

As far as the light saber battles go, remember that Luke spent like 2 days on Dagobah learning from Yoda, and maybe 20 minutes on the Falcon with Kenobi, and still survived his fight with Vader; who had 30+ years of training and experience.

Luke then had to learn how to teach the force and light saber combat to new apprentices all on his own, so I doubt he was as good at it as Yoda and Kenobi. Snoke doesn't really seem like the kind of guy who would use a saber, so no wonder Kylo Ren can only barely beat Finn and gets creamed by Rey. He probably has as much fighting experience as she does.

My thoughts are Rey is Luke's daughter, abandoned on Jakku to hide her from Ben Solo. They never mention ages in the movies, so you have to base it off ages of the actors, Adam Driver is 10 years older than Daisy Ridley. It's possible that at that point, Luke could feel the dark side growing inside, possibly even having a force vision of him turning and killing the other padawans. He took a then 3 year old Rey to Jakku to keep her safe. If she was in training when Ben turned, she would have surely died.

Snoke is strong in the ways of the force, but more than likely not in using a saber, hence Kylo Ren being able to use advanced force techniques, but not be as strong in hand to hand.

It's mentioned at one point that balance was supposed to be brought to the force, but there wasn't. Anakin was touted as the "chosen one" who eventually fulfilled the prophecy in 6 when he "kills" the emperor.

The final part of the prequel trilogy leaves you thinking that maybe Luke is the chosen one and Qui-gon was off a generation. I believe that Rey is the "chosen one" and they were off two generations. She is able to use advanced force techniques immediately, and is able to pilot any ship, same as her father, and grandfather. I assume she is Luke's kid because the family heirloom saber (how'd they find that anyway?) calls to her.

Rey isn't a Skywalker*

*Unless Rey is really Anakin reincarnate(which could be possible)

Anyone else notice what was "calling" Rey to the light saber? The screams of the murdered Jedi students......

Yeah, but in ESB Vader wasn't actually trying to kill Luke, he wanted him to turn to the dark side and join him so that "together we can rule the galaxy as father and son". Can't do that if he's dead. Even after cutting off his hand and dropping him down into the atmosphere of Bespin, Vader was still thinking of ways to capture Luke by letting Leia and Lando rescue him in the Falcon with its secretly-disabled hyperdrive (which they only fixed because R2 had been snooping around in Bespin's computer :-) ).

We never see a lightsaber duel in the original trilogy in which both participants are actually trying to kill the other one.

Rey being Luke's daughter makes sense. I wonder who her mom is?

Well if Ben fell and Han and Leia were on a break...

But thats just ridiculous, this is a disney movie!

(besides, there is already a Game of Thrones tie-in with Brienne of Tarth being the chrome stormtrooper lady)

Except it's not the "family heirloom saber" Luke lost the one Kenobi gave him (Anakin's) during the duel with Vader on Bespin.

Sword fights in movies are always choreographed for looks rather than correct technique.

My understanding is that a light saber has a gyroscopic effect that makes it a very difficult and dangerous weapon to handle. So the form is different and it's only usable by force sensitive people. But that might all be retcon to explain away why a "master" would have poor form.

A friend was just lamenting the death of Han Solo, I pointed out that Carrie Fisher and Mark Hammil probably work for gas money at this point while Harrison Ford commands millions to show up and pilots experimental planes in his free time. Kill him off now while you can do it on-screen instead of having him do an aeronautical Paul Walker and have to CGI him through half a movie.

I figured Snoke will be tiny, maybe the dark-side version of whatever Yoda was.

One of the things that got on my nerves though were the unrelenting "girl-power" notes: Rei snatching her hand away from Fin and being generally "liberated" to the point of making people want to say "lighten up, we get it, girls are tough too." She stood around in her tough girl pose so often I started mentioning it Tiger Mom. She agreed it was excessive.

The other was how hard they beat the "see, we're doing what you fans want" drum. Harrison Ford in the planning room talking about blowing up DSXXXL saying "that's what we do." I swear he all but looked at the camera and winked. It felt so forced that the magic of going into the movie world was lost for me.

Harrison ford has been trying to get Lucas to kill off Solo since Empire. That was one of the reasons Han was frozen in carbonite, in case Ford didn't come back for Jedi. He finally got his wish, and I bet he was the one who pushed it to be part of his contract to do VII.

At least he went out on his own terms.

Girl power? I always thought that Rey would have to be kind of tough and indipendant surviving on her own.

The "she's still a girl" moment was on Han's ship, when the creatures get loose and chomp a bad guy, Rey holds a hand to her face in horror as Fin yanks her away.

A long shot is Fin becoming involved with Luke and the Jedi. No, he doesn't seem as intuitive as Ray was, but he overcomes his feelings of wrongdoings while with the First Order, and the fear he had the whole movie right up to the point of facing Ren.

Maybe.
