Monday:  "Hey, it's a week day, lets go to the zoo because it will be quiet".  Forgot about the end-of-the-year school trips.

Anyway, it was a good time, but I suggest planning to see what really interests you and map it out first, wandering around all day you can never see everything.  I do suggest however taking the monorail tour.  You'll see thing you won't by walking around.

There's an enclosed hut full of Burgees (?).  You get a popsicle stick with food on it, they fly down and sit on yur hand to eat.

It's "budgie" short for budgerigar.

Very nice pics!  By my calculations, it's been something in excess of fifty years since I was there last.

I've been to many zoos and aquariums in the U.S., Canada and even in Spain. The Bronx Zoo is still my favorite. I used to spend a lot of time there as a kid.

Fun Fact:  The starter gang of bison for the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge in southern Oklahoma came from the Bronx Zoo in 1907.  There weren't any still running around loose in Oklahoma by then.

I'm not a fan of these kind of outings. So when PW suggested we go to the zoo, and knowing she's an animal lover, I told her I thought it inappropriate that innocent animals are caught and held in cages just so we can look at them. She thought about it, agreed, and we didn't go.

Well, the obvious counter to this is that zoos provide a point of contact where people can actually observe the animals, perhaps learn something of their characteristics and their habitat, and take their newfound interest and knowledge out into the world and make it a better place.

In the case of endangered species, is it better for the last members to perish in anonymity, or to be put on display in order to make people aware of their plight and sound the alarm?

Edit:  Pretty much all zoos of note are active in research and conservation.  It's not an animal prison.  There's a purpose.

That is certainly a possibility.

In the case of the Gaur (big ox) almost extinct but breeding at the zoo sent some back to the wild.

Wednesday is free zoo day for city residents so it's the busiest day of the week to go once the weather is nice.

Still makes for a fun day out. It and San Diego are the best two I've visited.
