everyone in NE ohio ok?

i drove home last night through rivers that slightly resembled roads complete with logs and debris flowing down them.

just talked to my dad. the river got up almost to the house. there is 2 feet of water in the garage - so all my transmissions and blocks are under water including a pair of fresh 700r4's. there is 2 feet of water in the barn so my 54 belair and my dad's 48 fleetline have 2 feet of water around and in them.

my 68 c20, mom's 96 blazer, and dad's 90 suburban are all in over the hoods. my car hauler is not visible but my dad thinks it is still there. my 14' enclosed equipment trailer has water 3 feet up the doors, so there is a mess of carpet and material for jobs, tools, and other that will be lost along with all the new rolls of attic insulation for my house. my 90 c1500 was spared as it was up close to their house and only got water halfway up the wheels.

the dog was stuck under her deck(her safe place when she gets scared), my dad had to chop it up to get her out as the water rose around her.

we live a couple miles away up on the hill so aside of a river in the basement our house did ok. but the roads to my parent's place are all closed and they are stuck until the water recedes. the water came down so fast it was crazy.

i won't be able to get over there to assess the damage for a couple days as their driveway will be impassible, but i hope to save some stuff. sounds like the blazer and suburban will be toast along with my 68.

Wow, sorry to hear. We got strong rain here (less than an hour away) but not nearly than strong.
I am sort of close by. Let me know if I can help.

Pat, that really sucks. There was lots of flooding in my area, including my creek, but no damage that I can see. Fortunately all of my buildings are on relatively high ground.
Drove in to work through the valley on Canal, and the canal wasn't flooded but the river was. Roads were all open, so it seems that in that area it wasn't as bad as it was closer to my house.
Let me know if I can help in any way.

Pretty amazing bit of rain. Flooding from Ohio to Texas out of the same system. That's a lot of water. Sorry about all of your wrecked stuff but glad to hear that the dog made it out. We've been in a drought so the water is finding places to go quite easily, usually this much rain would have been much worse.

I bet the 68 can be saved. No computers and simple interior. (I'm assuming a fairly stock truck here)

I was driving from Fremont to Sandusky about 7:30 pm. I could see ugliness in the distance but seemed to be traveling between the worst of it. When I got home we had standing water on the fairway, in the usual spots but no creek overflow.
My wife had the tv on and Betsy Cling was carrying on about N. Medina County getting hit hard.
Seems it stayed over the lake here then came ashore at Vermilion which got hit hard too.

here are pics from mom, standing outside her front door. river crested about 2:30 and has been receding since, so this is with the water about a foot and a half less than my dad's high mark overnight. kayak on top of dad's submersible suburban - see irony definition in the dictionary.

this is the deck the dog was under. you can see my 68(green tailgate) and barely make out a blazer in the background.

i guess the plan is this weekend to drain a couple engines, pull some plugs, fog some cylinders, and try and get stuff spun over/protected. i don't want to lose the 68, though it does have full coverage. it's also very hard to find a good 292 anymore. the blazer and suburban do not carry full coverage.

my dad believes the car hauler got stuck on a bush and that kept it from washing into the river.

they're claiming we got around 5" of rain over the course of under an hour.

so i went over to clean up some, the water dropped dramatically.

lots of job materials bad. rolls of vinyl, boxes of hardwood, bags of grout and mortar. dad's welder was 50% submerged. his log splitter was underwater.

the suburban is toast, engine full, all dash wet, water in ecm, etc. same for the blazer, it's a mudpit inside. both available for parts if anybody needs anything. my 68 got water up to the intake manifold centerline, none in the carb. oil level high so probably got some in through somewhere. distributor was underwater, going to drain the oil, add fresh, and see what happens. my trailer got pushed back 10 feet and stopped at a large bush, otherwise it'd have been in the river.

one of my fresh 700r4's was all plugged. converter and yoke in, dipstick tube in, cooler ports plugged.. it's ok. the other, which of course has all the upgraded hard parts, valve body, clutch packs, etc is full of water.

the driveway is a mess, lots of stuff going in the dumpster, some things are just plain gone, but it didn't get the house.

if they got flood insurance, which is separate from house insurance, then yes.

have flood insurance, they claim it only covers the structure itself and none of the contents. my mom went over their flood policy last night. it sounds crappy to me but i'm not sure how this stuff works. my house is up on a hill.

You have flood insurance and nothing is covered? Contact your agent and see if he will tell you that with a straight face....unbelievable

The local morning radio show knob is whinging that his BMW fat-guy minivan hydrolocked the engine after he drove through "a puddle".

I forgot what he bought but it's either an X6 or an X6M.

He's playing the "THIS IS EVERYBODY'S FAULT BUT MINE" angle.

according to the local cop my dad talked to, mr goddard followed a drunk driver into the water, as he couldn't see crap and just followed the taillights straight into the flood. he's a nice old man.

today i got to drive through lots of stuff that was underwater monday night, and they will be cleaning stuff up for months. part of the intersection about 500' from my driveway washed away, we had driven through it as the flash flood was coming. i'm glad i was driving something as heavy as an avalanche pulling my trailer, as some not so heavy vehicles got swept off the same roads i made it through. today everyone was cleaning out garages and putting the contents and carpet of their lower levels on the curb for trash. the tiny 2 foot wide creek down the hill from our house turned into a 40 foot wide 8 foot deep river when the flood hit, and left the water line and debris all over the road and guardrails to prove it. still lots of roads closed, and lots more that have been undermined along the edges.

crazy times.

Sorry to hear about the flood.

As for the insurance, flood insurance is quite a bit different than homeowners. Building and contents can be purchased independently than each other. Also detached garages are handled under different guidelines than the primary dwelling.

Good luck sorting it out.

it depends on how the policy is written, but yes, there's flood insurance thats only structural, and no contents.

but try not to despair, flood insurance should cover all the extensive drying out and cleaning of the premises. that process alone can be thousands and thousands of labor and materials.
