I just saw an article that said the internet uses more electricity than the whole automotive industry. It said 2% of all the electricity produced when to power the internet.

I can believe it. figure every tower based computer with 17" LCD monitor is using approx 110 watts.
How many PC's does your company have? not counting servers, switches, routers, wireless AP (network and point2point links), sats, etc
I'm thinking the headline ought to read computers use 2% instead of the internet using 2%, but then again they may be looking at a lot of you guys computer usage. Based upon the week day posts of the guys who at work, none of you actually use a computer for work.
Servers are difficult to keep happy - they require a lot of electricity, produce lots of heat, and prefer cool temperatures. That's a lot of energy just to provide a hotlink. My guess is that 2% is actually low.
I wonder how much electricity the city of Las Vegas uses?
I ask that, because just like the internet, it uses a lot of the electricity it consumes to "highlight" borderline pornographic images, doesn't produce all that much in the way of a useable product, and while you know it exists, most people will spend there lives not knowing exactly how it "works".
I apologize to Vegas lovers. Been there, didn't really see all that point to the place....especially stuck out in the middle of nowheres.

GRM IS porn, it's just car porn

I'm only here for the interesting discussions and articles... I don't look at the pictures.

I wouldn't count PC's as "the internet." Servers only in my mind.
I believe it is true that the internet uses 2% of American electricity, the little known fact is that 60% of that 2% is consumed by CarKid1989 "what car" threads.

all that electricity used up in Vegas is "green" energy from Hoover Dam.. i say it's better that they use it in Vegas than wasting it on Southern California..
Still--I always think it's such a crime that the rooftops of so many of these buildings don't have big solar arrays on them. The strip could be one helluva solar farm--in a place where the sun is almost constantly out.

Hell put them on the sidewalks at midnight! I 100% agree with you. I think a regional approach to the electricity issue should be taken. States like Arizona, Nevada, Texas, California should adopt a more solar attitude. Northeasterners could use geothermal and water... and we could nuke Florida. Not for power but just because.

Although that's true, it still amazed me that last time I was there, ALL of those flashing lights that completely cover all of the casinos were incandescent bulbs. The Hoover Dam could probably power 30 more Las Vegases if they switched them all to LEDs.
re: Hoover Dam powering So. Cal.
Isn't it hard to transmit power that far? Too lazy to look it up, but I think they lose a lot along the way and at some point it becomes a diminishing returns kinda thing.
Sorta like a car that costs $150 but is on the other side of the country. It's cheap until you figure out how to get it home.
I wonder what percentage of the U.S. power consumption is put towards air conditioning? I'd wager an even 4% is sent just to our little group of desks every day.

During the hot part of the summer I need more than my share of the 4%. When it's near 100 I neeed MOAR!
What's air conditioning?
Actually I think the office has air but the house we live in doesn't. Even at 90F+ it stays cool enough inside, plus living on the edge of the desert means it'll cool down considerably at night.
