In an effort not to derail another thread, where there has been a bit of Star Wars discussion, I'll submit my thoughts.

The problem with most Star Wars movies (and most of them have the same huge problem) has always been bad directing.

The original trilogy (ep. 4,5,6, for the uninitiated) were great, but everybody knows Empire was the best and it differentiates itself from the other two by having someone other than Mr. Lucas at the helm.

In the mid 1990s when the films were remastered, Mr. Lucas added a few previously cut scenes, added a bit of extra stuff to some of the backdrops, and generally added to the scenery. He should have stopped there.

I like the prequels for what they are. If you watch for the story and the "deep magic" bits of backstory and lore, and ignore how Mr. Lucas was able to transform some pretty decent talent into such terrible acting, I think they are worth watching. Of course there were flaws. But aside from simple bad directing, they were minor and easy to ignore. Mr. Lucas made his money and must have gotten bored because then he seems to have spent the next decade "improving" existing films for new recording formats (once for DVD, and again for Blu Ray release).

Enter Disney.

I really enjoyed TFA. Yes it was a big nostalgia bomb. Yes the basic plot was almost a direct ripoff. Yes there was some serious cheese. I can forgive that for a film that was entertaining, introduced some great new characters (yes, I even liked Emo-Vader) and was a story well told. Didn't care for Rogue One, probably because the ending was already known. Other than that I thought it was done well.

TLJ was a wreck. There has already been a ton of discussion on the topic so I'll be brief. BAD DIRECTING. I do not know what Mickey was thinking. All I can hope is that Mr. Abrams is able to a "Last Crusade" level trilogy-save. (Don't talk to me about the abomination known as The Chrystal Skull. Seriously, berkeley George Lucas.)

Just my thoughts. Still a huge fan. Still going to opening night on whatever other movies they churn out.

I'd like to be the first to register my outrage.

The real problem is going to be Star Wars burn out. With Disney threatening to release a new movie every year until it quits being profitable, that's going to become a real thing very quickly.

In reply to RevRico :

I'm already there, haven't seen any of the Disney ones yet. 6 movies was plenty.

My biggest beef with all non original movies, is the nullification of wonder. The force was some semi-tangible thing. It is then explained to be thingies in your blood. The removal of old characters and ideas, especially in Last Jedi really soured me. The Jedi meant nothong, get rid of the original people? If you did a better set up, we'd care. Force Awakened did a decent job, and last Jedi tossed all that asside. Trying to figure out Rey's parents was a huge, fun game. Gone.

Bah, so much to say...
