1971 Spa, 2nd place 300 SEL AMG... On my list of legendary cars to draw.
I drove it today.
WOW! that thing has been haunting my dreams since before I had even a passing interest in racing.
I wish I could drive it!
While I didn't get to drive the AMG version, I did get to drive my mother's uncle's 6.3.....and that was awesome in it's own right.
BTW, my mother's uncle was the second owner of his 6.3, he bought it from an 89 year old man who determined it was much too much car for him. My mother's uncle? He was 81.
That is the most freakishly classy racing car I have ever seen. I love that it still has the giant chrome grill and tristar.

It was pretty amazing. I'm in Germany for the S 63 AMG launch, they had this legend on a platform. Jokingly, I said "I wanna drive that! Imagine my surprise when they said "OK".
It's pretty loud, blatty, kind of clunky... and absolutely berkeleying marvelous.
You have to admire Mercedes for the way they treat their museum cars. They do get run. I saw the 722 SLR running in the Mille Miglia about 20 years ago, it left a very strong impression.
Awesome, Lesley!
I won't ever forget it. So far, it will be the only one of my legendary artwork subjects... that I've actually driven.

I love racing cars with history, the people who preserve them and the women who enjoy driving them.
Patronizing, I know, but the subjects in that pic make my mind wander.
Wow, that's extremely cool. Even to sit in it would be awesome, but to take it for a spin must've been something else!
Side question, did the Red Pig maintain the auto gearbox?
Yes, auto, unfortunately, but the shifter at least was a really tall cool one with a round knob on the end.

You bet. I will post it on here once it's complete!
That's great! I'm really not a Mercedes fan, but that thing has always been ubercool. I had no idea it was an autobox, though.
What a great experience!
