Which brings us to the question about driving conditions and speed: What did we learn on the show tonight?
That's the thing. Clear roads. There must have been a patch of snow that melted, but didn't burn off completely in the sun. With a 250 mile round trip, we would never go out with snow conditions on the highway. That's what caught them. Completely clear roads for 70+ miles.

I don't think there was anything a prudent person would have done differently. When you encounter a patch of black ice unexpectedly, the conclusion is out of your control. Glad it worked out as well as it did for your family.
I've ended up upside down in a car after hitting black ice, on Blizzaks no less. We were traveling 45 mph at the time.
I am glad everyone is OK, but I'm going to be a naysayer here and say the roof collapse is pitiful. Larger trucks do not have to meet the same regulations as cars and smaller trucks, and Ford in particular has a poor track record of roof collapses. A buddy i worked with had a wife killed in a Bronco when the roof flattened, and had another friend was killed in a F-150 rollover.
The first guy successfully sued Ford when his lawyers discovered Ford had set aside huge sums of money to deal with injuries and deaths caused by the collapses. Explorers suffered this also. It might be in your brother's interests to look into this.
If I remember correctly a full sized truck only has to meet something like 1.5 times its weight when rolling over, where cars are substantially higher. Some companies put a lot more than required into roll overs but Ford for years has been lagging in truck roll overs.
Great to see everyone is OK.
