A lot of you probably spotted the sunroof on the "GNX" during Kendrick Lamar's halftime performance, outing it as ersatz. Which is probably just fine as I'd hate to see them slice the bottom out of a real GNX.
Anyway, IMSA pit crew guy/car journalist Bozi Tatarevic has a nice explainer over on Twitter of the lineage of the car, including a link to the excellent Wired story as well. Nice digging by Bozi on this one.

For those of us not on Twit, cliff notes version?

Twitter makes it pretty tough, but you can use xcancel.com to browse with out a login.
This link should take you to Bozi's overview:

I'm still pretty confused that boot cut is back for men and the hottest Gen Z hip hop artist has chosen a mid-80's GM product as his ride of choice. But I'm here for it!

I think he has a song called that, or something like it. I'm not a kendrick fan, so ???. I respect the mans work, but Not Like Us really grates on me and I just don't like his voice.

Well outside of G-bodies being really popular among the POC community period... His father brought him home from being born in the hospital in a legit Grand National and he's always admiredhis dad's car. He bought his own GNX and named one of his albums GNX. He's a huge Turbo Buick guy. They purposely bought a trashed car (not a real GNX, might not even be a GN) with title issues to use as the performance car.
Even if it was a trashed car, it still pains me to see that picture of him standing on the hood.

I'm sure that doesn't even make the top 400,000 of inappropriate things that have been done on G Body hoods.

Dont care about logging in/out, care about giving any traffic to the website, even through a proxy.
As for a mid-80s car, he's a young man. G-Bodies were hot when he was a kid. We all yearn for what was hot when we were kids

It's funny how that works.
Now, if only I could have figured out how I could have bought a car when I was 10...

It wasn't really trashed from the "before" pics of it, although definitely not all original. I think it's kinda lame that they cut up a real one just cause they didn't care about money rather than just painting a regular Regal black.
If it makes anyone feel better, pretend you knocked on the previous owners front door and the said "It's not for sale, I'm gonna restore it someday".
I wonder where it will end up? It could probably be put back to driver condition depending on whether the stripped parts can be located and how much work someone wanted to do (welding etc)

The angst over humans on rare cars is not new. I still remember the hysteria in the Letters section the next issue after this one came out.

It was "respect the uber rare German car" vs "Al Holbert has earned the right to rest his loafer on any damn car he wants". It made for good reading for a few issues.

I don't think it's anything more than a hollowed shell resting on a pedestal at this point. I doubt there's even any suspension under it

There were a couple of dozen dancers under the stage that had to run up some stairs and exit the vehicle asap through the doors and open trunk. There's no way to do that with floorpans, trunk pans, a firewall, subframes, suspension, etc in the way.
In reply to STM317 :
Honestly, it would probably make a good amount of money on BaT or at Mecum. No doubt someone would snap up **the** Super Bowl Grand National and put it in their collection.

For now, at least according to one article I read, it will go on tour with him.

So I've been trying to parse why they went the way they did with a real (tribute) car instead of converting a normal Regal.
The search started in late October, seriously compressing the timeframe. At that point, it could be tricky to find a suitably rebuildable Regal and someone to convincingly convert it, source the GNX-specific bits, then perform the actual work to do the conversion, then prep the car for the stage mounting. If we assume this car sold for somewhere around the $25k it had previously been looking to fetch, that's suddenly seeming pretty reasonable given the time and labor constraints.

JG with the quote of the century right here!
We used to regularly eat a feast of Taco Bell off the hood of my friend's Monte Carlo SS clone back in high school, both using it as the table AND the seating. It was a tradition. I'd argue that's worse than what Kendrick Lamar did.

GMs in the 80s still had sheet metal with enough thickness to support someone sitting/standing on them and paint damage was the main concern. The biggest culprit for causing scratches were the rivets in jeans.
