I was shopping on CL for 15" MINI Cooper wheels for my Scion.

One guy had a set posted for $50. At that price, I could have dismounted the tires and taken the rims to the scrapyard for a profit. Even though they were filthy, I gladly handed him the $50.

Well, when I cleaned them, it turned out that half the "filth" was actually scuffed paint. I decided they were too ugly for my Scion, so I put them back on CL for $150 :)

A guy emailed, and I met him in a parking lot about 5 miles away. I really don't like bringing strangers to my house if I don't have to.

It was a kid with a beat Civic with 4 tires that were both mismatched and bald. He was glad to hand me the $150, no haggling.

Oh wait, I though this was a thread for CL success stories.

I never said it was all for bad experiences.

This happened to me on the SVT engine I sold. Advertised for $350 which was a steal. Moron comes to my house at 1am on a Friday night after driving 4 hours from central PA. Shows up blasting stereo and loud ass exhaust. Load up the engine and he says "Yo gonna give me a discount cuz I drove so far right?" I said sure, $300 (I just wanted rid of the damn'd thing). He says "All I got is $260, and I have to drive back home." I got $220 out of his good for nothing ass. Was so pissed off.

I'd have pulled the engine back out of his car. If it was a community guy then I'd have been lenient, but, if you're someone i never heard of who was willing to drive four hours for something, you want it. So pay up.

We had one of these buys who bitched that rallycrosses were inconvenient because they were 30 minutes away.

Meanwhile, 30 minutes was probably the LOWEST drive for the 25-odd people who show up on a regular, some from out of state (opposite side of Indiana to central-eastern Ohio). Douche points: TO THE MAX!!!

I actually had one of these guys say, "come on, what's it going to take to get this done today?" I told him the full asking price, plus shipping. Some people. I should have started adding money but it really doesn't bother me when someone tries to talk me down. It just bugs me when they get worked up about you saying no or taking someone else's better offer.

The last time I sold a car, it was a Mk2 Golf for $400 when going price for them was 4-5x that. I added $50 per week that it was for sale.

Someone whined "You're supposed to go down in price not up!"

I shot back, "I'm not selling it because I want to sell it, I am selling it because I need it gone ASAP. So it is in your best interests to buy it now!"

Ended up that a friend of a friend of a friend bought it, and I sold it to him for the Original asking price instead of the inflated price from sitting. I'm not a dick (well okay I'm a dick in traffic) but I needed the car GONE.

The biggest part of it with that broke crowd is that i refuse to deal with horrible lowballs, and i'm perfectly fine stockpiling these parts for my own purposes in the interest of keeping my car on the road long after the parts supply runs out. However, i'm also No Haggle Guy on the flip side. I see parts i want, i buy them. If i'm haggling, it's because i'm not REALLY interested, but will still buy for a screaming deal. If it's something i really want, or i NEED, i'll just pay asking price in the interest of getting it ASAP.

You and me, we see eye to eye. I don't haggle on buys, and I generally don't sell because I don't feel like dealing with that crap.

When I feel like selling, it's generally to a local community member who is getting a project together and needs X obscure part. I check eBay for how much the parts are selling for, then sell for half that, because i'm a hippie socialist who wants a strong local community. But at the same time, I've sat that part for ten years, I'm more than willing to keep sitting on it, so that price is that price and i'm already offering a screaming deal.
