The Watchmen (movie.)

Sorry if it's been discussed before, but holy crap that was one of the most entertaining movies I've seen in a long time. Three thumbs up.

I liked the umm.. "fight scene" inside Archie. Gratuitous.

...and totally unnecessary. Sorry. Even with the latex, that chick sounds too much like Drew goddamned Barrymore for me to pay much attention. I do like boobies though. Boobies are good.

I loved Vietnam except for the baby momma scene also.

If you liked the movie you'll really dig the comic. It's freaking dense. Like you have to focus on reading a freaking comic to get it all.

It's wild to think that comics were one way before The Watchmen. After it's publication you had things created like The Dark Knight, a more tortured Superman, etc. A sea change in the way comics were written.

I respected it for the raw style, but overall I thought it sucked. WAY too long. The sex scene added zero to the movie. I expected a gritty superhero movie, not porn. Character development was good, but I could have done without all the blue schlong shots.

Weird. I didn't really even notice how long it was...the movie, that is. And yeah, as far as character development goes, I think they packed a lot in...to the movie, that is.

I was fine with the length of the movie. The blue unit was laughable, the guy could transform himself to be any size and still his johnson was the size of a babys pinky... I'da been rolling with a ten pound sledgehammer as soon as I knew I could.

I liked the Kennedy explanation as well.

I really like that movie. It isn't perfect, but nothing of that sort ever can be.

Not a bad movie...

But one part kinda bothered me... They aren't super heros right? Just normal people who put on costumes for public good. So why years, or even decades after giving up that life do they absolutely destroy like 10 armed thugs?

They were special, strong, exceptional people originally, after that the next generation was "subsidized" by the gubmint

I saw the directors cut after reading the book. The style of the book was interesting (very dense) but I thought the end was quite bazaar and almost silly. I am not sure if I really like the book too much (probably mostly because I have heard it was super exceptional). The artwork, for example, was pretty standard comic stuff, not the really artsy stuff you might think of from a graphic novel. The directors cut of the movie is an almost EXACT duplicate of what they used from the book (leaving out some of the "dense" stuff). Most importantly the ending of the movie was different and I think was really a lot more sensible.

The book explains the characters / origins / situations a bit more, but yes the only one with real 'powers" is Dr. Manhattan. If you watch the opening of the movie, they run through a LOT of back story stuff which I can imagine would mean almost nothing (and might be confusing) to someone who hadn't read the book. I am not sure how someone who had not read the book might typically react to the movie, but anyone who had read the book should not be disappointed.

I would also agree the sex scene was a bit over done and while it was in the book, it was no were near as graphic. The baby momma scene was pretty harsh, but it was very useful in showing the mindsets of both the Comedian and Dr. Manhattan. I have not seen the shorter version, but I think it is reasonable to recommend the directors cut over it (it has 4 more scenes I believe).

They are supposed to release and even more "dense" version at some point, but I suspect that will just be very jumbled and confusing (it supposedly adds a secondary story that they ran through the book that was interesting but had almost nothing to do with the main story line)

I think what really impressed me most was the cinematography and music. The whole (LONG) opening credits were berkeleying phenomenal. Lots of tongue-in-cheek nods to other genres too. There's one scene with Nite Owl where I'd swear to god they grabbed music from the first "Lethal Weapon" movie. Funnay.

The sex scene was an "Aaaw come on" moment, but like jb said, purely gratuitous, and I think they addressed that with Archie shooting flames.

I've seen Watchmen twice now, the second time in IMAX. I loved it both times, and went out and bought the directors cut on DVD.

People seem to either love or hate the movie. I think the people that hated it went in expected a Spiderman or Iron Man type of movie, which it definitely isn't.

The movie came as close as anyone could to doing the graphic novel any justice. That said, it still came up a little short. I do like how they changed the ending from the novel. At the end of the book, I was like, Alien goo takes over the World? WTF? Dr. Manhattan as the scapegoat was better. I just wish they could have built up the end with Rorschach's journal a bit better.

Love it or hate it, I think the kiddies will do fine with this:
