My in-laws run several meat markets. You wouldn't believe the stories they tell.
My brothers ex gf was willed $210,000.00 when her old man passed. She hadnt seen, spoke to or had any contact with the man in a decade. Before the money, all she talked about was obtaining a realtors liscense, purchasing some land, opening a strip mall and putting here office in there. Seemed like a verrry logical and well thought out plan (for a 19 YO). After the money, all she talked about was ll the friends she hnow had, the new evo she drove, and the tatoo work she could afford. Flash forward 20 months or so...shes broke, has an STD requiring some kinda semi expensive treatments, and she has the card...still drives that evo though. frustrating cuz if she just followed thru with her plan, shed be my sister in law, Id work as a property manager for a strip mall, and could borrow the EVO on weekends for autox duty.
wait, now Im riding the coat tails
see, its contagious

Now, it may be a mental, PTSD thing, but he seemed extremely functional and I've been around plenty of guys with PTSD that are still in the Army -- you notice a difference. I had to ask him to leave before I said something I shouldn't have.
I'm not defending this guy, but being medically retired at 30% or more is still full benefits. So he could have full benefits, not be 100%, and still be able to work/function. If he's claiming "100%" then he's full of crap and needs to be reported. IIRC, you can be up to 50% and do anything, and 90% and still work part-time. At a true 100% you are not allowed to have earned income at all from work beyond a very, very small amount from self-employment.
There are those of us with legitimate medical problems that the military takes care of. Also not all military medical retirements are physical disabilities or easily seen. I went to school with a guy on 100% who jumped on a grenade in Iraq (Corpsman) and his internal organs are all FUBAR'd. He looks normal, until you see him without a shirt, and he has to use the bathroom every 30 minutes.

Would you rather ALL people who are receiving some sort of assistance look, smell, and dress like bums?
the reason this really chaps me is when our son was born. he had major health issues. my wife had to stay home with him for 6 or 7 months. he had major heart issues.. we decided as much as it hurt my ego to apply for assistance. well to make a long story short. we got NOTHING. the lady in the office we spoke to basically said you rhusband has a job and health insurance. you dont qualify. here we are two hard working honest people just looking for some short term help and we got nadda.. but some chumpass slacker who doesnt do anything gets the world handed to him.. i apologize if i rub some the wrong way with this but it just annoys the crap outta me.
I'm a medical officer and am very familiar with the system. Normally I don't have a problem with guys getting benefits. Some of the combat medics who work for me certainly deserve what they're getting for all of the stuff they've put up with over multiple deployments (heading back in 2 months BTW). But this guy was a total sham and it's guys like that who make the system seems so illigitimate to people who aren't familiar with it. That is what really irks me. Its harder for the guys who really need the help to get it because of the guys who abuse it.

We were in the same boat 6 years ago when the twins were born... at 24 wks. We didn't qualify for anything, or so we were told, because we both had jobs. And, yet, of course, medical insurance didn't pay for everything in any shape form or fashion. We went through our entire life's saving(think 6 figures... we had kids later in life) and are still trying to recover from those expenses.
We found out later that we could have gotten a significant amount of $ help, but the hospital(who's supposed to inform you of this) never gave us the information we needed. Only way we found out, a mother in my wife's office who makes more than both of us combined, had a preemie at the same hospital but was told of the info.
When we got the information,we went back to the hospital administration to try and recover some of the money. But, alas, it had been more than 2 years. They also said we had refused them when we were asked. Of course, I asked for anything we might of signed about said refusal... no records at all. Even after talking to an attorney, we've had no recourse but to suck it up.
Burns my butt, too, when I see people getting something for nothing and raising their multitudes of kids with the same attitude.

Nay, nay. It's not urban legend at all. It happened to me in the pre-EBT card days, I was behind a woman with about eleventy billion kids who had a cart FULL of stuff. (This was pre-express lane as well.) She paid for the eligible stuff with food stamps, she then paid for the non eligible stuff (beer etc) with 20's peeled off of a roll about 2" in diameter. I paid for my little bit of crap, when I went into the parking lot she was loading all this stuff and the booger machines into a brand new Chevy Caprice with dealer tags etc. Man that pissed me OFF.

That reminds me... Income gained through illicit means (dunno if that's the case with the person in Jensenman's example), doesn't show. So a person can qualify for public assistance, and as long as they work under the table, or on a table, or in a back seat, or on the corner, they don't have much to worry about.
