The wife and I, along with wanting to take a little jaunt out of the state, are also looking at prospective cities to move to. And from a lot of things I've read, for what we want, Nashville might work.

I digress..

We are going to take a long weekend at the end of next month in Nashville. And I wanted to see what the kindly GRM folk would suggest we check out while we are there.

We will arrive early Friday afternoon and leave Monday morning.

What say ye?

Car related - Lane Auto Museum.
Shopping - Opry Mills.
Carousing - Music Row.

Grand Ol Opry: Friday late show broadcast on radio and the show includes the commercials. At least used too. Was fun even if you're not into country music. Saturday late show broadcast on TV.

If you don't go to the Lane Museum your "Car-Guy" card is in jeopardy !

+1000000000000 on the Lane Motor Museum. My favorite night spots are Cadillac Ranch (but drinks are a little expensive), Legends and Macfadden's. Sunset Grille is a pretty good place to eat (I am trying to think of other places) and you should go walk around Opryland Hotel (I think it is reopened).

Looks like Opry Mills is closed indefinitely at this point, due to the flooding and now insurance litigation.

Parthenon is a scale replica of the original in Greece and free! Usually something happening in the surrounding park on weekends.

Nashville has a hundred year old full size replica of the Parthenon in centennial park:

Inside is a gilded gold statue of Athena:

It's the coolest thing this side of the Lane Museum IMO.

Pay attention to the bill of talent on the riverboat cruises. There is one dock right in the back of the opryland hotel's parking area. The Sunday Brunch cruises aren't cheap, but sometimes you get really lucky and its a very talented group performing.

You won't see big names like Dolly or Kenny, but you will see some insane talent. I saw Chris Thile playing with Corey Chisel before they were "big". Highly enjoyable music.

Also, suggestions on places to stay would be greatly appreciated. We'd like to keep it downtown or the west end, our budget for the room can go as high as $200/night if it's a nice place, close to "things to do."

Really? Wonder why they didn't take us there. All we saw was the inside of the Leaf, looking out.

Hermitage Hotel downtown. Easily the best hotel I have ever stayed at and real stars stay there too.

The only thing I know is that one of my friends used to be a night auditor at the Hotel Preston.

It's pretty far off the beaten path, but there's a bed and breakfast in Joelton called the Hachland Hills Inn.

The owner, Phila, is an amazing cook and crazy cool lady. Used to have a cooking show in the 50s, has met everybody from presidents to celebrities on down to riff-raff like me. Some of the buildings date back to the 1700s, I'm told. Just a really cool place to stay.

Nissan of North America let people attending Z-Attack see the collection in 2008. Here are some pictures

I hear that Nissan Global is the same way with the main Heritage Collection in Zama, Japan. Very few people get in. Here are two pictures from the Zama site http://www.importtuner.com/features/impp_1006_nissan_heritage_car_collection_part_1/photo_04.html

I'm not the biggest Nissan fan, but I would pay good money to just be able to spend afew hours walking around in there.

I'll second (third? fourth?) the Lane museum. It's a great collection, and they're good people--and GRMers, too.

Yeah, I pretty much already told the wife I was going to the Lane Museum, period. And that if she didn't want to go I'd drop her off to go shopping or something.

My fiance isnt much into cars at all, and she thought it was pretty cool. She didnt appear to be in any pain/stress/boredom as I took my time really checking things out.

Except when she thought we were leaving then I wandered over into the garage that serves as storage for some of their rougher condition/military vehicles.

We stayed at a hotel more uptown, it was right across the street from the Parthenon/park. We had to drive downtown to where all the bars are, but there was a parking garage a block or two away.

We also did a "hearse tour" of the city at night. You get driven around the city, riding in the back of a hearse with its roof cut off and they tell you stories about hauntings. I thought it was ok, fun thing to do if the weathers nice plus you essentially get a driven tour of the city riding around in an old hearse. Whats not to like about that?
