I just finshed watching our monthly board meeting online (they were rumored to be discussing my future) and started to look up some things I had questions about. I stumbled on this site . An entire site dedicated to guessing and second guessing the actions of a bus company. Part of me finds it slightly more disurbing than Japanesse porn but the sad attention whore side of me wants to join to see if I could get a fan club going.

Never seen Japanese porn, can you elaborate?

Can you elaborate in a family-friendly manner?

That site reminds me of the time (and is almost certainly a modern version of) a while back I meet someone who was a "bus spotter". Basically they went around, took pictures of and recorded different types of buses!

I thought this was VERY strange. I thought about it a bit more and it is not entirely strange. If you think about it, it is very similar to bird watching (which is a bit strange) and also very similar to most types of collecting (you are just collecting pictures or data, rather than items). I have also heard of people who "train spot" as well as "airline spot". I suspect you could do it with almost anything that can be classified, tree spotting, rock spotting, chick spotting, celebrity spotting, car spotting. Hey, who's got a picture proving a "spot" of a Renault turbo 5, such a rare bird... err I mean car.

Realistically, any type of collecting is a bit strange, but humans seem to have a very strong tendency for it.

Think of something weird. Anything. Yeah, the Japanese make porn about that.

The strange thing is that it often crosses a lot of cultural taboos - both Western and Eastern, sometimes both - but, because of a vaguely worded definition of 'obscene,' even the raunchiest and/or most shocking of scenes will have the genatalia of the participants pixelated or otherwise obscured. Although, the recent trend, and the latest taboo to be challenged, seems to be unobscured anatomy. (This strikes me as particularly odd because the Japanese have a more relaxed attitude about nudity than Americans.)

Like a lot of modern Japanese culture, to me iit reads like a bizarro-world version of our own.

The british are into train spotting, plane spotting, etc. I've heard of people creating huge catelogs of info on planes numbers and the like. Sound like a boring hobby but car spotting has its ups and downs too.

You can thank us for that. Up till WW2 the Japanese had a thriving culture based around naked and erotic pictures.. when we cleaned up the country after the war.. one of the things we cleaned up was "dirty" pictures.. we actually had them pass it into law with their constitution.

Leave it to the ingrained puritanism of Americans to screw up something as wholesome and natural as tentacle porn.

IIRC when overseas porn is brought to England they have someone flip through the magazines and put blue paper dots on all the fun stuff. So here's my question: if British citizens aren't supposed to see the naughty bits are the censors British citizens? Or do they hire illegal aliens?

Only on this site can you start out discussing NYC bus aficionados and segue into a discussion of porn the world over.

Somewhere there is a dedicated gov't worker sacrificing his eyesight to protect the people of England. My guess is that he worked his way up from transit worker.

I can see the news now, "NYC transit authority dispels rumors and settles age old debates with outreach to service users through press releases and other commonly used communication avenues".
