berkeleying hardcore. I'd like to do something similar with a commercial property in the future (out of school) for shop space. But live in a $500 house on the east side, berkeley that noise. I'll stick with dwellings pre equipped with electricity and running water.

The story sucks. It's long winded drivel from some bachelor of arts wannabe who basically has decided he is cool being a hippy and living in a E36 M3 hole of an environment.

I mean, yes, it is interesting, but not anymore interesting then basically somebody saying "I'm going to go out into the mountains and make a go at it". Not everything can last forever, and sometimes E36 M3 just has to die. Detroit could probably stand to completely implode, and MAYBE it will come back to being reasonable... but it's time of being a major city is over.

That's pretty much exactly what happened when we bought our building here 4-years ago. Granted, this isn't the hood in Detroit, but all our turn-of-the-century buildings have been decaying. We paid a bit more - $2500 - but we also have 8750sq-ft.

There are more buildings available too.

BTDT, it doesn't look terrible from that angle.

Funny, I was thinking about moving to detroit the other day. As long as I feel like being armed at all times, it's cheap and people leave you the berkeley alone, especially if you're a crazy white boy.

My experience exactly. People (homeless) rarely bother me in Detroit. There's some body language you need to be aware of to make this work, but between that and being a crazy white boy, it works. I don't go looking for trouble and I don't get any in return. Though I still sleep next to a 12 gauge riot gun in the event some dude jacked up on PCP kicks my apartment's door in.

I split a 1050 sq ft 2 bedroom, hardwood floor luxury apartment, including all utilities but electric and cable, including such ridiculous heat I dont close all the windows till it hits 15 or so, or the wind starts blowing. In a area just nice enough there are like 6 other white people living here, for a whole $625(my share $312), I dare anybody to beat that anywhere else in the US.

I've perfected the crazy white boy look from years of dealing with north Minneapolis. I can probably do it in Detroit. I was just trying to convince the wife to let me buy a E36 M3ty house out there and live off her income while we make it pimp.

'merica, freedom, f*&k yea!

I'd never live any place like that. Call me whatever you want.

Oh, and anyone can SURVIVE in a place like detroit. The guy didn't have friggin' heat for two years almost. I can hack it camping with the best of them, still doesn't mean I WANT to do it for 2 years, which is basically what he did. Basically, all he did was squat somewhere for two years. He can make it seem like he had some great grand vision of the future of detroit, but really, he's just some BofA that couldn't get a job at starbucks.

I'm actually not trying to hate ON him; I applaud his perseverance. I'm hating on the ideas he espouses which are basically bullE36 M3.

The odds of such an event are extremely low, I'm way more likely to be killed in a traffic accident.

canadian troll is trolling. why bring (a) hippies (b) squatting or (c) starbucks into it? he works for a construction company. he bought a house. he lived in it while fixing it up, including spending eight grand on a roof. he made his neighborhood nicer. he helped educate some kids. he was ready to blast someone trying to kick in his door. perhaps red deer alberta hippie starbucks squatters do those things too, i'm not sure because i've never been there.

Where exactly are you at in Detroit? I've thought about moving up there on and off because it's so cheap. I like Toledo, lots, but living 10 minutes away from my parents drives me freakin' nuts most of the time. I haven't lived this close to them since I moved out of their house 8 years ago. I love my parents but I need my space. My Dad works for DTE downtown and I'm up that way at least a couple times a month.

Rossville, IL. Google-map "BFE", we're just down the road.

Seriously, we're an hour from either Purdue or the U of I. Indy is 90-miles, Chicago is 2-hours(when traffic is good), StL is about 3-hours. What "crime" that does occur here usually involves someone you know, and we have high-speed internet(finally)!

You know... besides the fact that he quite plainly laid out the jobs that he worked the whole time, and paid money for his house.
