There have been hundreds of small earthquakes over the past few weeks, with a big 5.7 yesterday morning, and then a 6.4 this morning- all in the SW part of Puerto Rico- mostly off shore, some on shore. There has been damage- with homes collapsing.
Since the large on this morning, there have been 19 sizable aftershocks- some big most under 5.
Scares the heck out of me, as my MIL is in Ponce- very close to the action, and two over her Aunts live in apartment buildings... And we are scheduled to go down next weekend.
Dude PR just can't catch a break. My thoughts are with your family, Alfa.
It’s sure been rough down there. :(
I guess if there’s any “good”(?) news I read that the tsunami warning they received only ended up being a few small waves. It’s a good thing they issued the notice rather than taking chances though.
up to 25 +2.5 aftershocks now. (last one at 10:40 local)
Seems like it would be releasing energy slowly with small quakes vs. one huge one like the one that was in Haiti a decade ago. At least that's what I'm hoping.
Just saw one of the famous landmarks in Guayanilla has collapsed.

A school collapsed, too. Good thing 1) yesterday was a holiday in Puerto Rico, and 2) it happened super early.
As of now- 9pm EST, there has been 70 earthquakes in the last 24 hours over a 2.5 mag, and 66 of those were after the 6.3 this morning.
Enough, earth. You're drunk.
Yeah, be nice to hear some good news from Puerto Rico.
It's probably hard to find good here, but the non-trained geologist in me thinks 70 smaller quakes is a lot better than one big one.

Me, too. And they have been smaller and coming in bunches. Even more encoraging now is that the last reported tremor was over two hours ago as of this post (9am Wed).
Saw some pictures which were hard- a restaurant we know about was an old brick building. Was. Now it's mostly a pile of rubble. And there's about a meter crack in the ground near the port area of Ponce.
On the other hand, even with all of the collapsing buildings and homes, only one person has died at this point.

I keep thinking about Puerto Rico posters as well, but I think my brain went off on the wrong track when I read the thread title.

Hopefully they can come thru this, they are a tough and resilient bunch.
