You are right. I have no idea who deserves what. Maybe the guy was a dick. Maybe the cop was a dick. Maybe they are both dicks. But isn't that the point of the conversation - to hold our little internet trial based on a selected portion of the relevant information?
I think what he's saying is that as things have gotten more complex and we get shoved closer together there have been more rules passed to make sure we play nice together, and that results in things which would have once been surveyed with a shake of the head and a 'damn, that was dumb, glad it's not me, glad no one was hurt, let it slide and let's get on with life' turn dickish.
Much like our school principal friend in the other thread who came down hard on 60 kids riding bicycles to school.

I grew up 1 town away from there. That would have been a County Park Police Officer.Without all the facts it's hard to critcize either party, but it sounds like they both over-reacted a bit.

Not me, but at the same time, I think going 5mph over the speed limit and crashing your car into the river are on a little different scale, aren't they?
The point is, no matter how well you try to raise your kids, they will occasionally do stuff that just makes no sense.
This is the truth. I've had my otherwise well behaved 4 year old have a moment of childhood insanity and do something incredibly stupid.
You can't walk around with your hand on your kid's shoulder 24x7. It just isn't possible, but most importantly, it isn't good for the kids.
Another thing to keep in mind is that a 4-5 year old isn't going to have any real concept that they are mortal. In fact, I'd argue that for the first 5 years or so of your kid's life, your primary job is to just keep them from killing themselves.
How long does it take to put the car in gear, or set the e-brake? Dad got a ticket for doing something kinda dumb. I'm neutral on this one. Sure, I'd be irritated. But I'd pay the fine, post here about how unjust it was, then get on with my life.
I set the E-break by reflex, since I drive a 5 speed, but most people don't.
Most logic flies out of the window when you think your kid is going to manage to kill themselves. If you've not operating on reflex, things won't happen when you're in that mental state.
