Damn, they just don't last long enough. Remember the joy and the love. The hurt will get better.
I feel for you.
There's an old collar hanging on a family photo in my office, reminding me of a certain collie who shared our home. I have to keep the very end in context with the much longer, wonderful middle of her life, when she helped raise my kids - and made us all better people.
Molly was a "rescue" that we only had for 3 yrs (she was exactly what we wanted) an older dog that my 90 yr old Mom could have for a companion (and she quickly wormed her way into my heart also)
she had belonged to a young couple in Asheville that had two dogs … both about her size
they had a newborn baby, and Molly was starting to become extremely "protective" of the baby … to the extent of growling and lunging at the other dog anytime it came close to the playpen … the were afraid that when the baby started crawling that it could become caught between the 2 dogs at some point
so one of them was going to have to find a new home … we got lucky …she was a wonderful companion for Mom, and for me
Sorry to hear this, it is downright cruel that these faithful companions are only in our lives for such a short period.
My oldest german shepherd(12yo) still lives with my parents due to not wanting to upend her entire world when I moved. The time is sneaking up on me, and that one will be exceptionally tough.

Me too, shucks.
Damn, Walter. Sorry to hear this. Several years ago we had to put down Shana, our golden, because her hip displasia just got too painful for her. The vet made a house call, she went calmly and in peace. It broke my heart, man. It still hurts to this day.
In reply to wbjones: I'm sure if she could talk she'd say, "I wouldn't have had it any other way. I got to spend my life with you".
Bummer. Reminds me of the worst (same) thing I ever had to do. So freaking sad.
Sorry you're going through this.
