So I was walking around Wally World waiting for the wife's prescriptions and I ended up over in toys. They have small collection of ERTL toys. As I was looking at them I realized that all the 1/64 stuff isn't Diecast anymore, it's all plastic.
Growing up with ERTL toys especially the farm toys, all the vehicles were Diecast. So I decided to look up their website and was surprised to find out they were purchased by Tomy some years ago.
Kind of disappointing to see the quality has gone down.

There still are some diecasts.....they're usually collector versions not sold in big box stores.

Its exactly as bad as you think it is, with government officials literally saying "books could hurt people in case of an accident"

If I was a kid, I'd keep reading and my parents would back me 100%. If I ever have kids, I will never expect them to bow to "the man" and some of the incredibly bullE36 M3ty rules they create.
Smart-ass response: As an Ontario driver, I believe that every precaution is necessary to protect our children from Quebec drivers.
Logical response: This particular bus driver may have issues, but OTOH if he got through last winter he's probably entitled to a little slack. (I once heard a bus company exec describe school buses as "Recess in a can," and I'm sure we can all relate.) Maybe if this hadn't made the news it would have just gone away. Obviously it's OK for a kid to read on the bus. Sheesh. I hope cooler heads will prevail, particularly at the school board, which really ought to know better.

Yeah but at one time you could buy Diecast stuff from the big box stores.

I don't live all that far away from Dyersville, Iowa where Ertl used to do all their diecast work. Got to tour it once with a group from one of my Dad's professional society (engineering at John Deere) groups. It was a really cool tour, but that was going on 30 years ago. Good memory of something done with my Dad though.
Miss that kind of small town business in Iowa anymore.
