Britain's 'cheapest' lunchtime meal was unveiled by scientists on Wednesday - the toast sandwich.
The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) is reviving the mid-Victorian dish, which, unsurprisingly, consists of two slices of bread around a slice of toast.

and people bitch about what we spend money researching in the US....
The usage of captionless what's-his-face is brilliant. I haven't laughed that hard in days...
What's up with the picture? I don't see salt or pepper in the recipe!

I can't take credit for the serious xzibit meme but it is the first image that popped into my head after the inevitable "Yo dog. I heard you like bread, so I put bread in your bread so you can eat bread while you eat bread" thought happened.

What do you think we are savages?
Hell they are british. Don't assume their first attempt didn't include trying to boil the sandwich.

I tend to be something of proponent of British food, but there are plenty of low points. Think I'll stick to my Cornish pasties, fish and chips, and shepherd's pie...
They should have done fried bread instead of toast.
Isn't fried bread French Toast?
no sammich is complete w/o bacon
I just tried it for lunch. It's the greatest thing since sliced bread.
In reply to porksboy:
I'm imagining the Monte Cristo version of this sandwich: three pieces of French toast sandwiching two pieces of normal toast, with powdered sugar and jam.
well i guess now I know what to do with those crusty ends of the loaf.
put them in a sandwich.

I'm rather fond of pasties, but I'm not familiar with the Cornish ones? Are they worn by Cornish strippers in certain repressed areas where the fully unclad breast is considered taboo?

Round here the only time they wear those is if they serve booze.

So you have to choose between booze and nipples? I thought this was a free country.

I found your train of thought wise and insightful, and would like to subscribe to your newsletter.
who would have thought that three pieces of bread with some butter could have so many calories?

That's on the low side, even at 80 calories a slice...Plus it's all E36 M3 turns-into-pure-sugar white bread, too.
My mother's favorite post-Thanksgiving "dish" is a stuffing sandwich...pretty much the same thing. And no, she does NOT add gravy to that stuffing.
That needs some Pumpernickel and rye
