The driver's side door on my wife's car could not be opened from the outside. Thankfully, I could open the passenger side door and push the driver's door open from inside. We've been taking turns driving our son to the bus stop so he wouldn't be standing alone in the brutal cold waiting for a bus that might not show up.

Since you may have been expecting a joke...

Today, it was so cold that... Tiger Woods wanted to sleep with his own beautiful wife in order to keep warm.

Can't tell you the number of times I have climbed in from an open passenger door or hatch due to frozen drivers door. It's a high number

Trick being, don't try to open the drivers door till the weather improves. Keep climbing over the center console. Just because you can open it doesn't mean it will latch shut. I have also driven to work many times holding the door shut with one hand and heater on full blast hoping it will thaw out before I get to work...I've also needed a jump due to a door that never latched and drained the battery with the lights... more than once.

The high down here was about 45. That was this morning and it has been falling ever since. 35 now. Y'all could keep that cold up north. We really wouldn't mind.

My wife grew up in Rochester NY. She laughs when people cancel school for things like snow and ice and cold. They build'em rugged up there.

Seriously, she sits by the TV in the morning calling people Bob Costas for canceling school.

I've lived in Atlanta Metro for a little more than 20yrs. In all that time, I've seen one salt truck.

It was in a ditch.

That being said, there's just no justification to maintain a fleet of gov't vehicles that only get used every 3-6 years or so..and as a native Southerner, I'll let my friends from up Nawth call me a Costas during the winter if they'll let me return the favor when I invite them to my big outdoor barbeque in August, and they spend all their time in the house instead of out in the yard with the rest of us. Y'know, the beer tastes even better when it's 60degF colder than the air..

It's 9 degrees right now. Will be down to 0 later on.

Smiley face is because I'm going ice fishing with my boy tomorrow. Finally get to try out the new shanty that my wife got me for Christmas.

6F here right now. Going down to about 0. It was 1 this morning and +12F this afternoon.

The trick to opening your car door is: CRC (BIG GRM advertiser, hint hint) Silicone Spray. You spray your door seals down with that stuff at the start of the winter and you can open the door all winter long. Tech tip I learned here on the board. I do the trunk gasket too.

Its 14F here right now on its way down to who knows what... 25mph wind.

For the 1st time ever - it's a rock solid 55F in my garage. Thanks for the heater Santa.

The clowns who run this city and the weather-guessers really got burned with the "blizzard" of '83. Ever since then they have applied "the sky is falling" approach to preparedness.

It's much cheaper to let moronic drivers to deal with their personal insurance companies than to pay for legal defenses or equipment that is rarely used.

Listen to Kurt Mellish's forecasts, pay due diligence and you do just fine.

I grew up in southern Pennsylvania. My school district almost never canceled or delayed school. Maryland, on the other hand... I remember driving to work the last two winters that I was in Pennsylvania. I worked in Maryland and I listened to the Baltimore rock station on my way down because it played well into York, PA (98 Rock for all you familiars). I would hear one 1-hour delay for PA (maybe) and then every school in Maryland would close. Over a forecasted snow shower. That never came.

Man, and I remember trying to dig the Z3 out of an inch of ice a few times just to try to open the door. Both doors were often frozen shut. Then all the accumulated ice on the windshield had to be thawed and broken off... Of course, I almost never made it out of my driveway anyway because I lived at the top of a giant hill that usually iced up nicely. Even on snow tires it was impossibly scary. I used it as a good excuse to call off of work.

The problem is we dont get snow like you do. It comes down, thaws on the road, then refreezes as black ice ocassionaly with snow on top of it. A solid sheet over ererything. I dont care how well you drive in the snow up there, when you hit the black ice on cardiac hill on Peachtree road you will be glad you are in front of Peidmont hospital. You wont beable to steer whith zero traction. braking? fagetaboudit. acellerate not a chance. When you loose your momentum mean old mister gravity will pull you to the bottom of the hill and drop you in the Darlington parking lot with no way to get out of your car because you wont even be able to stand up.

As for studed tires? For 2 days every 3 years it is cheaper to stay home and snugle with your best girlfriend. Or boyfriend if you stay at the Darlington too long.

Maroon, after Day 1, it ain't snow anymore. It's ice. I had a lot more trouble getting out today than I had yesterday when it was soft & crunchy (and even my summer Yokos could find a little bite in it.. ) And even if my fave tire store had studded tires, they'd probably dry rot between now and the time I'll need them again..

Or maybe all I need is some lessons from the Archer Bros.

Yeah, but IMO that's also the fault of the profit-driven crap that passes for "news" these days, especially from a local outlet. But that's a different thread..

I actually got around pretty well in the 93 one, but it was really snow instead of turning to ice about 45min after it fell to the ground.

When I made it to the corner store today (beer & cigs..and an extra firewood bag & Sugar Free Rockstar for the resident female), I was fortunate enough to meet the local driver for the Miller Beer distributor here. He was driving one of those COE shorties with an articulated trailer and he told me that once you get out of these country arsed backroads (east of Acworth) and get to the major routes (I-75/US 41), everything's cool in the daytime.

I called out of work today (Fri), but we're a 24/7 buisiness (large cable TV network provider), and the bosses will scream like banshees if I don't slither in on Saturday. Looking at the GA DOT website, it looks like I can get to work on Sat, but won't be able to come home Sat evening (I work from 2p in the afternoon until 10p at night).

And agreed about Mellish. The only reason I still have 96 Ro...uh, I mean "The Project 96.1" programmed into the radio is because they share weather/traffic info with WSB..and I don't have the shielding on my ignition wires to listen to AM when the engine's running.

Last year we had snow just once and our power went out. I figured a quick food option would be to order some pizza, but they would only do carry out as they didn't want their drivers out in the snow. They're only 5 minutes from the house and most of the wait is at red lights.

Due to multiple accidents, abandoned vehicles and a road block by the police, it took nearly an hour to get the pizza. The whole time I was on the snow covered road, I had no problems. We lived in Michigan for 3 years and I enjoyed practicing (playing) in parking lots when the snow hit. I couldn't believe how many people screwed up and wrecked their vehicles in such a short distance. There are so many bad drivers out there, that I'd probably not go out just to avoid one of them hitting my car.

By the time I was home, our pizza was cold. Without power, we ate it cold. Our kids barely complained.

Sometimes around here they have had to cancel school because of the cold because the buses wouldn't start. Otherwise its always because of snow... When the buses don't move, you can't really have school.

Don't pull that one mate, here in Ohio that is our normal Winter, usually 27 at night and 35 for an hour in the afternoon, we have ice every day. Last year I drove to Toledo (100 miles) by 7am, 7 days a week for 6 weeks straight transporting a patient, every morning it was a sheet of ice, especially in the fast lane which they never clear properly.

Oh and maroon92's driveway and his road is a sheet of ice all Winter, I picked up the CV there last weekend and they had to use their tractor to tow my van, trailer and the CV up the drive and to the nearest side street that actually let me go downhill. Before you talk about ice come spend a little time here.

When I moved to Atlanta in 99 my first winter (2000) saw an ice storm hit the north side. I lived in Sandy Springs just off of exit 6 on the 400. I was able to get my Alfa Spyder around a pickup going nowhere but backwards out of the apartment parking lot as it had a slight incline. I got to work. At Ellis in Chamblee. 4 other guys came in. All Northerners! I used to call Marietta the accident capital of the world. Seemed like there were more driving alerts on the radio than music. Back north now. The Smartcar is quite amazing in the snow with proper snow tires.

I bet the smart is good in the snow. Little tiny skinny tyres and the engine and trans over the rear drive wheels.

Earlier this week I had to climb in through the hatch of the ti. Locks froze shut on the door and could not turn the key

Only annoying thing about the smart in the snow is the damned stability control. Can't disable and since it's tied to the ABS can't simply pull a fuse. Won't let me go sideways easily!

Oh, and it does take some time for heat to make it up front and clear the windshield. Other than that We've been very happy with it.
