I am 75 years old and have had toenail fungus for over 20 years.  I have been applying Ketoconazole cream that was prescribed by a VA Doctor for abut 18 months with very little results.  Previously anther doctor had me take a pill that made me dizzy and vomiting.  It doesn't really bother me except the nails look yellow.

Is there anything I can do to cure this and will it cause me other problems?

I used some Ciclopirox solution for about six months, then on the advice of my nurse practitioner, switched to a nightly application of Vics Vaporub.

I think the Vics is working better.

Only mildly related, but I've found the best, fastest solution for a coldsore is Tiger Balm.  No cure, virus related, so life long, but they don't get as big, and heal faster.  Perhaps any wax application would do the same thing.

My point, I guess, is if you've had it 20 years, managing symptoms is probably your best direction.

I rid myself of fungus from the big toenails on both feet after having it for years. I started in very early spring. It took most of a year. Here's what worked for me, YMMV:

-Daily cleaning and drying of my feet

-Daily application of a drop or two of tea tree oil solution per nail right after drying

-Weekly check of my cuticles and nails, cleaning, pushing back, and trimming as needed

-Wear sandals every day. Sandals with socks when it was cool. I kept this up through November.

-Over winter I wore shoes outdoors and switched to barefoot, socks, or sandals whenever possible while indoors.

Good luck!

Read the reviews and see the photos.  I bought this about a year ago and it's about 90% gone.  By winter it will be 100% gone.

This stuff worked for me.  After a shower I put it up under the nail and all around the cuticle.  You will feel it killing the fungus.  Get a nail kit with a good nail / cuticle tool.  Remove all the dead skim often.  Switch shoes and socks often too.  I can now wear flip flops or Sandler in public without a care.

That's why you read the reviews and see the photos for yourself.

I've seen great success with Bag Balm applied every night for a few months.

Just saw my podiatrist for this and another issue (a car ran over my foot!)  Anyway, he prescribed Lamisil, which as it turns out, is terbinafine hydrochloride!

He said one pill a day for 90 days and that's it. Will take up to a year for the nail to grow out and the discoloration to go away. I'm 75 as well and had a small spot show up when I was 18, the doc then said not to bother with it as the cure was worse than the disease.

Of course it looks way worse now since it's all black, blue and a whole host of other colors!

Y'all need to be aware that a potential problem with oral anti-fungals is liver toxicity.  So if you're taking one, reduce your alcohol intake.

Sorry.

I've had it for a number of years, I remember the ex wife had it & the only thing that works was a very expensive rx that was out of pocket, wish I remembered what it was.  Probably what you're describing above.

At 56 trying to decide how much I care now.  Although the new Star Wars costume is the prisoner costume with bare feet, and right now I'm not doing bare feet. ;^)

Do you care enough to try $12 and a few minutes a week?  You could be rocking that costume in a year.
