When the Hollywood types get their hooks into the show, it will probably star Danica Patrick, Mike Rowe, and Jenna Jameson.

"Top Gear in America not dead"

Too bad.

TG is a show made up of James May, Richard Hammond and Jeremy Clarkson with a heavy dose of British humor. To remove any single component of this formula would make it something else.

I would watch that show... as long as it didn't involve a Top Gear logo.

fixed. Wonder if any random car washes would break out during a segment?

Duke, I would put Mr. Rowe back in there and put Ms. Fox in place of Jenna. Unless of course you enjoy spending time under a patio in Ormond Beach, FL. :)

Besides, have you seen Ms. Jameson lately? I think she's going to star in the prequel to Tales from the Crypt! LOL

This would all be so wrong without british accents.

So i suggest an angrier side of Top Gear. We'll grind your gears!!!

Simon Cowell
Gordon Ramsey
Jason Statham

They're all actually decent drivers, i believe they all at least have a passing interest in cars, and i enjoy all three of them tearing anything and everything apart.

DONE.

I would also like to replace the current judges on American Idol with these three, add in Jeremy Clarkson to make it an even four.

well, what makes the UK version work is how unique the characters are. You have the one car guy - Clarkson, then two that didnt have a clue about cars Hamster - a TV soap star and Capt. Slow - a pianist. So i would say, find one car guy, and two that dont have a clue, then you might have a chance...

Didnt read the whole thread, but i think this captures the essence of what makes Top Gear actually fun to watch.

It is UN-pretentious. Something no american car show really matches. In America, anybody hosting a car show has to either have or put on an over-leveraged affront of 'authenticity', pushing their legitimacy as hosts by acting too hard.

Top gear is so easy to swallow because its personalities are NOT aggressively pushing their own legitimacy or trying to be cool. They play actual characters, not car-info talking heads.

I dont think it could be done any better than it's being done by the current crop. So i say no new show, just port the show to US stations unchanged. Or leave it as it is, and ill watch episodes on youtube on my Wii in the living room or on the computer just like i have been. Id rather pirate the show and forward NO money to the franchise, than see an American company ruin it by trying to squeeze the most money out of it.

Actually,Get a P.J. O'Rourke--somebody who is a self professed car guy

I didn't know how true that was until I read this http://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/moslive/article-1250020/PJ-OROURKE-Dont-let-killjoys-ruin-motoring-dreams-thats-did-America--youre-next.html

History haggling for U.S. version of 'Top Gear'

"Top Gear" may finally be coming to the United States.

History is in talks to bring the UK automotive hit stateside, the cable network picking up the project after the show languished at NBC for many months.

Top gearNBC came close to doing a stateside version for the broadcast network back in 2008 starring Adam Carolla, but shied away after "Knight Rider" crashed.

NBC did a variation on a popular "Top Gear" segment on "The Jay Leno Show" this season -- where the talk show host's guests would race hybrid cars around a custom-built track -- but it never really fit with the talk-show format.

A cable-sized version of "Top Gear" has always made more sense. No hosts are yet signed.

No. The UK version is on BBC, so there are no commercials. They get the full hour, we get about 45 minutes. You'll have to find it on the internet, not quite sure where to go... Casttv has some of them, final gear is good but not streaming, etc.

Again, TG UK is a very popular show overall in the UK. But a lot of the popularity is amongst non-car folks who actually get the jokes about local politics, actually know the local celebrities, and have actually seen the cars we don't get here.

While many of us car guys still know the last on that list, and can suss out the politics jokes, the average viewer in the US will get none of those three things if they just bring the UK show over here. Who cares about or knows some BBC drive time radio host driving car they've never heard of? That's why Top gear UK itself can't work here outside a comparitively small audience of us oddballs, and might actually be worse than doing a true US version.

I would say this, I like the star in a reasonably priced car, but they could cut the interview time in 1/2 IMO.... I do want to find some full length episodes just to see for myself WHAT they cut out and whether I would miss it....
