I'm trying to get an idea of what I could tow with an XJR (x308 or x350)

All of the resources I see show that depending on how they are equipped they can either tow 1600 lbs or 4100 lbs.  That's a huge difference.  Anyone have the real scoop?  I would imagine my boat is 4000 lbs all dressed with a tank of gas and other stuff.

My only word of caution is the boat ramp and the tires. We used to tow with a Crown Vic, and we had real wide wheels and tires on the back (255?). Well, they were Potenzas, and we got on a slick ramp, and we could not pull the boat out. Scary feeling as it is sliding backwards into the water.

The place where I boat has a sand ramp, so they have a tractor they use to launch for you.  Some folks try to do it themselves with a 4x4 and its not pretty sometimes.

If I owned that I wouldn't be selling it; sorry, bud.  That's just what popped into my head.  I assume you mean one of these:

...or are you just as crazy as you've ever been, and you do want to tow with the Jagger?

Yes.  Just as crazy as ever.  Thinking of towing with a jag. I tow this boat twice a year for a total of 1000 miles.  I have a line on an XJR that someone would consider trading my F150 plus some cash, but that leaves me without a tow pig... at least for this summer.  I figure I can pick up a cheap S10 or something in the fall.

Go for the gusto, man!  I know in Europe they probably wouldn't think twice about it.  But I have no actual XJR experience.  You could always rent a truck for the weekend, though that would suck the fun out of the drive.

That seems like a really bad idea....

I would be looking more at what trans the car has and what it is rated at.  You can build / modify the car to real with everything else.

Compared to a regular XJ, the XJR has more power, extra cooling, stiffer suspension and stouter brakes. In other words, it has the towing package!

It also has reduced ground clearance, and in the case of the X350, an aluminum body which is tricky to mount a tow hitch to.  X308 would be preferable.

But you're not mounting the hitch to the body, you should be attaching it to the frame. Typically with about 4-8 bolts.

Fine, I'm always happy to be corrected.  I can't find any images of the steel chassis for the uni body monocoque al-yoo-mini-um jaguar x350, do you have one?  There is a tow bar available, but u-haul aren't likely to stock it for immediate install...

Damn, you're correct. Forgot that the Jags were monocoque.

Agree transmission is the part I'd be most concerned with.  I bet they're not cheap, either.

The trans is I'm pretty sure the least failure prone part on the car. It's the Merc unit that goes behind the v12s.

I can't find any hitches available for my 308 (other than a wimpy 1 1/4 class I) but I have thought about towing with it too.

Long wheelbase, good power, good cooling, good brakes, relatively heavy, I can't see why it would be bad at towing.

The XJ8 gets a wimpy normal trans (Jatco I think) that I wouldn't trust to handle a trunk full of luggage.  The XJR gets a much beefier (and much more expensive) Mercedes unit that should last forever... until it doesn't.

FWIW, I had a crew cab S10 and did a short around town tow with a 21' cuddy cabin. I don't think I've ever been freaked out towing before, but I sure did not like doing it with that combination
