I wonder if Toyota is to blame for the horribly bad ABS system in my old E250 work van or my Datsun 620's rusted out frame.According to this vidio maybe they are.

I like the new Toyots ads where they assure us that they are moving forward......I cannot help blurting out things like, "sometimes unintentionally!" or "and if in a Prius we may not be able to stop."

The media's really having their way with this thing. When Explorers were spontaneously combusting, and 1st gen Focuses were rolling out of the factory with back seat legroom that could only accomodate a double amputee nobody batted an eye.

Also, Toyota turned me into a newt!

(I got better.)

Maybe down there but here the news was telling people to look in their driveways to see if their Explorer had rolled over and killed anyone while they were having coffee.

Nah I know the rollover thing was a big deal, but since then nothing's been hyped like this.

Tinfoil hat speak:

Maybe now that the US govt. is in the car business they are encouraging the media to be all over this. Maybe, just maybe the Fed is looking with a jaundiced eye at these problems that don't seem any worse than the kind the other automakers have all time. Its really hard to say.

The other side of the story:

I was working on my Toyota truck over the weekend and I have a 3" gash on my forearm now. Coincidence? You decide.

I don't think the government has anything to do with it, but you can bet the Big Three are pulling in all the favors they can with the news outlets right now to keep this at the top of the pile.

My old 1980 Toyota 4x4 had a leaky rear main seal at one point. Yanked the tranny & transfer case, removed the clutch, unbolted the flywheel, and wrestled with replacing the #%$@*&$ seal. Got everything buttoned back up and.... it still leaked.

The darn thing decided to drop an oil pan bolt and leak from there while I had everything apart. Toyotas can be sneaky like that.

Then how do you explain that Japan's government is also investigating some of Toyota's problems?

It's not all the fault of the D3, nor is it the US presidency attempting to kill Toyota because they're non-union (that's another argument I've heard).

Unfortunately, it has become too much of the responsibility of the government to stick their fingers into private businesses. But thanks to unscrupulous and greedy executives (and other factors), it is now necessary.

Because of the public outcry, I'm sure. Hey, I'm not saying that it's only an issue because the US automakers are pushing it, but if I were in their position I'd be making sure the issue stayed at the forefront of people's minds.

I heard an interview recently in which a columnist being interviewed discussed the "Toyota religious fervor." It seems that Toyota buyers are loyal to the extreme. Some of them wrote in angry letters when he wrote a review of the Toyota Venza, saying that the quality was lower than he expected.

My Mom's a Toyota loyalist herself, and she's suggested to me that this whole thing is conspiracy

Someone at work the other day asked me, because he knew I was a 'car guy,' what I thought of the Toyota 'debacle.' And I said, "The only Toyota things I care about are third-gen Supras or an AW11s or AE86s."

He was really confused.

And as a side note: yet another reason I maintain that cars shouldn't have electronic throttle linkages.

I'm a car guy, and I'd be confused, too. I've sold auto parts for 20 years, so I think I know something about cars. That doesn't, however, give me the right to talk about the cool FC that my dad has, and expect everybody else to know what it is.

It's a '63 Corvair Rampside, by the way (and that's how I refer to it). FC means Forward Control. Many kids think FC only refers to certain RX-7's.

My 82 Toyota Corolla needed a clutch about three years ago, before that it was the water pump and fuel pump. The battery I took out of a scrap car I picked up only lasted 5 years and now the Corolla is starting to rust.

Oh, yeah, the dealer battery only lasted 7 years in my 1996 Ford F-150. I had to put balljoints in it last year too!
