Well I have a 1994 toyota pickup which I'm finally making nice now that I've had it 10 years.

It has the original tape deck though it looks like at some time there was an aftermerket unit put in the car. It looks like all the wiring works, but one of the speakers produces very little sound. I checked it with the old voltmeter and I'm getting 6v so I think that is fine as with a split channel you get 6V to each speaker.

With the balance adjusted all the way to the speaker it make some but not much sound. The weird thing is that periodically the channel will come back on so I really don't know what the issue is. I think it is in the radio itself rather than the wires. I put a known working speaker to the speaker wire and it still made very little sound. I really don't know what to do but I figure I could always give it a bath in contact cleaner and see what happens.

I'm just getting ready to do a Dago run for the holidays and would like it if the truck had working speakers and AM/FM.

Thank folks!

That's a good start - the balance control can get gummed up so that nothing comes out of the speakers. Spray the heck out of it, and work the control back and forth a bunch of times.

is the balance digital? if its a pot, it might be dirty...

It is a knob you twist so it must be a mechanical device. I'm going to spray the radio down in contact cleaner and see what happens. I did get it pulled out, looks like a crankster attacked my car.

Thanks for the input folks.

I opened the radio up and blew the fuzz out with compressed air. Then I sprayed the thing down with contact cleaner, still doesn't work. I think this radio is shot, I'll have to wait until after the holidays and hook up the alpine.

Thanks for the help and suggestions folks and happy holidays!

I have a 90's toyota radio left over from someone's radio swap. Never seen it work, but it looks trauma free. Looks like this:
