Retired Mom & Dad will be traveling next summer, and would like to take their dog. He's a good traveler/camper, but that's not the issue.

They are planning a trip into Canada. Are there any precautions, documents, warnings, etc. they should be concerned about?

Canada might not be too bad.. but a lot of countries in this world do -not- have rabies and will require an expensive quarantine period for the pup to make sure he is not carrying it

The only issue anybody from here has going south is dog food. There is something about making sure it stays in the original bag, so the border people can be sure the ingredients don't include imaginary nasties. You Yankee types seem to get your knickers in a bunch about dog food...

Bring his/her medical records. No problem.

We have experience crossing between our respective countries with dogs and horses. No issues as long as all of their shots are up to date and you have the records with you.

Oh yeah- tell them to leave the handguns at home. Canada Customs gets in a real snit over firearms.

You can bring firearms to Canada, It is actually cheap and easy. Handguns and restricted weapons too.. You just have to follow the rules..

Here is the problem with bringing restricted and Non restricted guns/ weapons across the border.. Huge amounts of people who try to cross the border with them don't tell the border agent they have them, or deny having them..

Canadian law requires that officials seize firearms and weapons from persons crossing the border who deny having them in their possession. Seized firearms and weapons are never returned.

If you tell the border agent exactly what you have, you will have to pull over and fill out some paper work and pay some (usually) low cost fees. You are good to go 99% of the time..

You may have some weapons put into "impound" until you leave but you won't lose them. In some cases you can even transport them to you destination (likely Alaska). But they will inform you about the rules to do so.

Thanks for the info. I passed this link along to Mom.

They won't be taking guns with them, even though Dad is a hunter and Jackson is his retriever.
