Having never seen the original, I had to rate this movie on its own. I see the Oscar hype, great performances, good story and great locations. It also had period dialog which always seems to help. It wasn't an action rollercoaster of a movie, but it was solid. The little girl was awesome, and despite all of the people who got shot and killed during the movie, its only a horse that I felt bad for.
really well made and acted, but I think I ruined it for myself by reading the novel earlier this year - it's pretty much scene for scene by my memory. I ended up enjoying The Fighter more despite having followed the last 2 bouts of Mickey Ward's career.

Hard to one up The Duke...but The Dude is on a roll.
I loved it having never seen the original or read the book. Made me want to read it though. I'm hearing The Fighter is awesome, too.

One more for never seeing or reading any other, but seeing this one. It was awesome. Highly recommended, even if you don't necessarily like westerns or Coen Bros movies.
Loved it's mix of comedy and hard core western. Great flick.
Cant wait to see it.
Then again, I cant think of a Jeff Bridges movie I didn't like.

"the fabulous baker boys." You didn't like it.
guys at work are against this movie simply because it is a remake of a movie the Duke was in.
I intend to see it anyway
Haven't seen it yet, but pretty much every comment I've seen so far has been positive. Around here (Ridgway, Colorado) folks are kind of mixed - the original was filmed here, and it's kind of a legend, so we're disappointed that this one wasn't shot here, too. But then the Colorado mountains don't look much like Arkansas or Indian Territory (Okalhoma), and Colorado doesn't have the big incentives for filmmakers that some of our neighboring states do. So the two big things missing form this version are the Duke (probably well replaced by Bridges, from what I hear), and the mountains.
If you haven't seen the original, you should. It's good.
I am seeing it today, so I will report back. I have seen the original recently but have not read the book.
The original movie is good, but it does seem a bit cut short at times (like they were rushing though parts). I think it is kind of hard to have The Duke play what is almost a bad guy, so I am expecting more "grit" from Bridges. The original is also slightly goofy at times, but that is most likely because of the era it was made in.
BTW the girl in the original was also the mom in Better Off Dead (the movie with the SS Camaro):
I've heard nothing bad about Jeff Bridges in this movie, either during filming or now, and I felt him in a John Wayne role was the number one thing people would be concerned about.
Gonna see it next weekend after the rush has died down some.
I worked at the local theater as a teenager when the first True Grit came out. Saw it so many times me and my friend knew the dialogue. I felt it was John Wayne's best role and got him the Academy Award that year instead of Dustin Hoffman in Midnight Cowboy (who should have taken it).
This is one movie I thought should not be remade, but I excited about it and will actually lay down some green to go see it.
OK, I saw it.
It is pretty similar to the original with some small differences (ending is totally different). Bridges has some very good intense scenes. The dialog is very interesting, but can be difficult to understand at times, especially Bridges, since he talks like he has marbles in his mouth.
Very nice cinematography, very good acting. The movie is actually rather funny in places (although I certainly would not call it a comedy) mostly because of the dialog and how the character verbally spar with each other. The character interaction in general are great.
I am not really sure fans of the original or Wayne would be offended by this in any way. It really is a different movie style wise, and it would be hard to say Bridges was parroting Wayne's performance.
I would definitely recommend it. I would have like to see Duval (who played Ned Pepper in the original) make a cameo at some point. He probably could have even played Pepper (played by Berry Pepper strangely, who sounded like Duval in the movie), since the guy looked rather ragged.
I am not so much bother by the fact it is a remake of a John Wayne film as I am by the fact it is another berkeleying remake. Everything coming out of Hollywood is a berkeleying remake or sequel and it is starting to piss me off.
