man up... I've moved our old 32" tv (CRT) by myself more times then I can recall... WUSS ;-)... (note i'm 6'4 and my wingspan was JUST big enough to get my hands around it...

I also moved a 40" CRT (old mitsubishi awesomeness) by myself... but that involved a hand dolly... it's a lot easier to move the 47" LCD lol...

that being said I'm in the "rent-a-center" camp... at least if you are that desperate to watch a bunch of guys carry a ball around with their hands

Head over to Lindas' and watch the game. She has a nice TV, a pool table and always puts out a good spread for the guys. Giggidy. And when the game is done, we can have a fun game of stuff the fat man into the Spec Miata.

Lol Todd. I am not sure I would fit in that Miata. A stock one just fine, but not her spec car with that little race seat. She might be half my size. Will you be over there for the game?

Update: We just borrowed my in-laws 32" flat panel HD that they have in their camper. Yes I said in their camper. They have a better tv in their camper than most American's have in their home.

I like to watch football games that matter alone. That way I don't have to listen to some lubed up idiots take on what I'm seeing.

So to bring this thread back to life. Squared away with the warranty company a week or so ago. Turns out the tv was going to cost $800+ to fix, but we bought it new for $770 or so. The warranty company cut us a pro-rated check for $575. Now we need to replace the TV as we are borrowing a spare set that belongs to my in-laws. What kind of TV should we buy? I was talking with some guys I play hockey with and they were saying DLP is great. I know nothing about them aside from my B-I-L got a big 55" one for free a few years back that needed a new color wheel that he bought online for cheap and installed himself.

I have been scouring CL as well as a trip to BJ's for some supplies and I checked out the selection of TV's there. I don't want to go crazy, but I could go as high as $1000 with the check we got for the old TV. Any suggestions? I would like to stay in the 42"-50" range as we had the 42" and it was fine but the room could take a little bit bigger without any troubles.

sounds like a good deal... I know my 1080p 47" vizio LCD was like $600... def not top of the line but it had the features I wanted and it was a Christmas gift ;-)

DLP is the best bang for the buck when it comes to inches... you can buy a used one for super cheap when someone upgrades to a flat panel... I know the one big issue is the bulbs have a fairly short life... they aren't expensive or hard to replace (for a typical GRM guy) but that doesn't stop people from nearly giving them away.

after that plasma is the cheaper of the flat panel options... uses a bit more power and has the glare on the screen but known to have much better picture quality and better blacks and can suffer burn in (always amusing to look at the display plasma TV's at the store when they've had the demo mode on... you REALLY can see how bad the burn in can be lol

LCD uses less power, not subject to burn in, doesn't get true blacks, can have motion blur etc etc... although I don't notice the motion blur while shooting peoples faces off on the xbox ;-)

LED = an LCD with a LED backlight... and more energy efficent still few other perks but none worth 2x the $$$ to me.

anyway... for how much they gave you you can replace it with a new same size or bigger.

or you can go used DLP, get something bigger and save some cash

The newer bulbs are pretty cheap compared to a few years ago. My last Samsung DLP, the original bulb was still going strong in November of 2011 (purchase date was October 2006).

Most bulbs are under $100 each I believe now.

Our current Mitsu DLP is 65", paid less than $1000 for it about 1.5 years ago.

You can get as big as 73" now for just over $1k.

I think the high-end plasmas look better, but not enough better to me to justify the price.

Why did you bother putting a tv in the basement if it's too cold to go down to watch and too heavy to carry up? Also complaining about having to watch a game on a 32'' thats not HD just sounds silly to me. I've never had anything larger than a 27" and never one that was HD. My wife and I haven't had cable or even local channels for years. It allows us to interact w/ our son and each other and we don't become zombies laying around wasting days watching tv. If there's a football game on we go to the local BWW and watch it with others while we grab a bite to eat. It amazes me what people think they just can't live w/o .

Rant over. Carry on.

I know it sounds silly but I have become a bit of an HD snob. I am not proud of it, but it is true. The idea with the TV in the basement was to finish it off,and I started to, but haven't finished the project. It isn't too heavy to carry up, but I just don't want to do it again. What happened was when we moved in the old owner of the house sold us their entire tv system with surround etc for real cheap. We brought our 32" tv with us, and just put it in the basement as it was really the only place for it. We can live without the tv, but the timing was bad with the Super bowl, and my favorite team being in the game. It is okay to judge though.

I haven't turned the TV on in over a week. Worked on the Europa some today instead of watching millionaires play children's games. But, hey, if that's what you like to do, whatever.

So, take that $575 down to Wally World and buy you a new TV. If you kick in another couple bills, you can get a monster screen. Just pick the one that you like the best. They only have 40 or so of them playing at once. Stand back, say "That one" and hand them the debit card.

Well besides that, what should I do? I mean that goes without saying.
