Ok, I was reading a car magazine today (sorry, it wasn't GRM, rhymes with Flemmings Notor Pews) and they were describing switchgear and used the word "niggardly". Yeah, I looked it up and know what it means, but wow, if I said that in public I'm afraid I'd be beaten like a red-headed step child.

I'm always amazed at how many supposedly educated people don't know that word. I got accused of being a racist by a girl of Mexican descent because I used it. She was an ENGLISH major. I use was, because it was too difficult for her.
Even after I explained it to her, she didn't believe me. Then I showed it to her in the good ol' dictionary. She said it was outdated. I just shook my head in amazement.
I think that word will get nixxed just by nature of sounding too close to a word this country is extremely sensitive about.
Yeah, I mean wow. Like I said, I looked it up and know (now) what it means but the "N" word has been made so terrible in the media that anything that sounds even close seems wrong. And that is more than close.
Fark.com filters the N word that ends with an A out as "nubian." So "niggardly" becomes "nubianrdly." Of course, they don't have a FILTERPNWED problem, they enjoy it!

I knew it was a word. The etymology is completely different from the other 'n' word; it's not even spelt the same. The slur is with 'er', not 'ar'. Nothing to do with each other.
It would be the same if the magazine had referred to a "chink in the armor" - nothing to do with the slur on the Chinese, even though it looks identical.
I was too niggardly to repair the chink in the armor so I cleaned it with spic and span and sold it to a man in Jewiston.

It's rather an antiquated word anyway. Used to see it in literature. I don't have a problem with it, but would never use it in speech.

Great, now you've managed to offend bridges all over the world.

Say What worthy, except the AFL-CIO would all over GRM.

Wow, poor guys resigns because of other people's ignorance. That's just sad.
Idiocracy is here folks.
I love this part of the article:
a white person can't afford to be colorblind. They don't have to think about race every day. An African American does.
Apparently white people DO have to think about race every day or they could lose their job due to other people's stupidity.
At least Mr. Bond has his head screwed on straight:
NAACP Chairman Julian Bond, who in criticizing Williams last week said that people should not have to "censor" their language to meet other "people's lack of understanding," praised Howard's reinstatement.

I think...Often times alot of white folks are looking for an excuse to use slurs, or words that sound like slurs. Not saying this is the case here, but it seems to happen.

I won't disagree that "it" happens, Joey, but there also seems a predeliction for others to seize upon some statements either because of ignorance or the pursuance of other agendas.
There comes a point where PC-mandated civility cannot mask personal or cultural failures.
Just sayin!

Well yeah, and those that get mad about it are a bunch of ignorant bastards as well, but it seems to happen alot. Kind of the "Im not racist, but..." sort of statement. I know some folks are waiting for a chance to say something like that. Alot of those people live in my town. I love it when someone nearby says, "Well, you know how these (insert epitaph here) are", to which I love to answer "No, I have no idea, tell me". Seems racists always figure the rest of us white folks are racists as well. I also get a kick out of when someone tells me that I dont understand, they have to deal with (Insert another epitaph as well) all the time, and they cause problems. To which I reply that I have to deal with white folks all the time, and 99 percent of my problems are with white people, so white folks must be trouble (I think I only deliver to two black people, I live in a overly white town).
Sorry, this is neither here nor there, and Im not disagreeing, people who cant use a dictionary and are quick to get upset about something that isnt there are just as stupid as people looking for an excuse to use words are terrible. (Niggardly is not terrible, but the "n" word is)

I dont understand what the problem is with saying necrophilia. It is a useful and descriptive word for an unfortunate mental illness. If the word is eliminated from the english language how will those aflicted and the doctors who treat them ever begin the recovery process?

- reluctant to give or spend; stingy; miserly.
- meanly or ungenerously small or scanty: a niggardly tip to a waiter. –adverb
so people don't have to look it up.

Whenever I hear someone say something along these lines, I say "What?" as if I did not hear them the first time. Usually they edit out the stupid part the second time.

I was going to cite that. It's amazing how in this PC world even proper vocabulary can be construed as racist.

You failed to respond to my text that I was in Gainesville and we need to go to Stubbies. I felt unloved.

John Brown goes for the added point, after a total win with the first post..

Calling someone an American on other continents could be considered derogatory slang.
