Two different sized pistons, but all four of my o-rings in my rebuild kit were the same size.

I verified the part number versus what I ordered in RockAuto and in doing so, I discovered that I ordered the ONLY kit that was marked "42mm pistons only".

This is when I discovered the dust boots in my kits didn't fit either (strike two?)

ohhh, nooo...  man, really? twice? you made me laugh (sorry blush)

But seriously, i'm glad that the truck got a lot of your attention smiley

Hi everyone!!! heart

I promised a recipe of Ukrainian borscht by Vikki a long time ago angel

I have some free time, so - here we go!!!

"Borscht by Vikki"

One important note! Every host or hostess makes borscht in their own way. There are many variations of borscht recipes.

This is my way of making it as quick and delicious as possible - but it's still gonna take you at least 1.5 hours wink

You can try cooking two variations:

The first one with meat - then you need to cook broth with meat you prefer, it could be beef, pork or chicken (i prefer pork ribs or chicken)

The second one - it's a vegetarian version with beans. I don't use canned beans!!! It is better to soak dry beans in water for at least 12 hours (overnight) and then make broth.

Next, everything is cooking in the same way smiley

While the broth is simmering, you'll need to peel a couple onions, a couple carrots and beets

The broth with pork ribs this time smiley

Chop the onions and fry them in sunflower oil (sunflower oil it's important!!!)

While the onions are frying, grate the carrots and beets and add them to the onions

Mix them together and stew over low heat. Don't forget to stir once in a while.

The continuation below wink

smiley

The next step is to add tomato juice(i added homemade juice), in options it can be tomato sauce(only tomatoes and salt) or puree of fresh tomatoes without skin

and add the bell peppers (fresh or frozen)

mix everything together and let them stew a while

if you think you've been doing nothing but mixing vegetables and looking at the pan the whole time, you're mistaken wink

At the same time, you should peel and cut potatoes and add it to the pot

The bay leaf and allspice go to the pot as well

Add the vegetables with tomato juice to the pot, some salt and a little sugar

While the process in the pot is continuing, chop the cabbage

now it look like this - our goal is almost achieved wink

The continuation in the next post...

Finely chop the garlic and dill

Where do they go to? mmm... you know laugh right?

Let the borscht simmer over low heat for a while(ab. 10-15 minutes).

Yes, it will smell good, but don't eat it right away, please. Cover the pot with a lid and leave for about 15-20 minutes.

The borscht even tastes better the next day.

You can try the borscht with some black bread and sour cream smiley

Bon appetit!!! heart

Any questions?

Unless there's more than one yahoo address involved in this operation, we should be good (but please let me know if you don't see it or if it went to the wrong place). Thanks!

Sorry I wasn't able to get this updated in a while.  Work has been beating me senseless lately and the Mazda picked this point in time to blow a rear shock (I was hitting the bumpstops for a couple weeks while I waited for a set of Koni's to arrive).

I'm only now realizing that i haven't caught you guys up on the tire situation.  here we go.

First:

Really the only hot topic is our Dr. Julia fundraiser.  We had a REALLY nice finish there and closed with $1725 in the account (minus the paypal fees).  and as I mentioned, I'm in possession of the tires:

So what'd we get?  Blizzaks!!!!! 5 of them!

This had me pretty excited.  I didn't even know these were offered here (we usually buy Continentals), but I had a set in Tacoma and absolutely LOVED them!

I also had no idea they were made as a run-flat...  so that was definitely a win.

The spare is a full sized wheel (rim plus tire) but the shop owner couldn't find a used rim anywhere local so he had to order a brand new one.  True to his quote, he didn't charge me a penny over what he said it would cost.  I gave him and his co-workers about 5000 forint ($13) as a tip for beer money (since it was a friday) and in turn the owner reached behind his desk and pulled out three beers (for home consumption).  It was good times.

Next up, that compressor arrived!

This thing is GIGANTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seriously, I had no idea it'd be this large.  Dr. Julia is going to have a heart attack when she sees it.  Thank goodness it comes in that carrying case.

I really cant get over how over-powered this thing is for what we're going to use it for.  The compressor in my Toyota isn't even half this things size!  Seriously, if Dr. Julia is in trouble and needs air.  This will get her out of there in about 2.3 seconds or less.

Plus I'm betting a crafty Ukrainian could run a tool off this thing.

All in all, not a bad haul (and we still have a bit of cash on hand to buy more supplies!  but more on that later).

Thanks guys, and again:  Sorry for being out so long.

Man, this drive is coming up fast.  I had to drag myself out to the garage by my own collar and belt-loop...  ANY second now Summit is going to deliver those Bilstein shocks and I can put my truck back on 4-wheels, but until then I set about tidying up some of the other things my truck failed its inspection for.  One of those was the door cards.

When I changed from electric to manual windows, the door cards obviously wouldn't work.  Ordering a set from the US was prohibitively expensive.  I think Dark Monohue mentioned getting 1/4" plywood (or the equivalent, which I DO have) but apparently a buddy of mine found a "round tuit" before I did.  Short story long, he had some useless sheets of aluminum laying around and some free time.  I made him a cardboard template, and he cut the aluminum to shape.  Today, I fit the first card:

That actually took way longer than I care to admit.  Plus beforehand I had a warmup session where I fitted the new corner markers with the clear lenses.  That took a complete re-wire of my marker lights and blinkers (the new corner markers are dual-bulb, as half of the assembly is now a blinker as well...).

A bolt missing from my tow bar was another failure.  I got that taken care of (the bolt was still in the truck.  I simply bought a nut for it at the hardware store and Bob's your uncle).

Not a bad Tuesday in the garage.  Tomorrow will be better (especially if those parts arrive!)

good times.

The new door cards look really good! Sure is nice to have a friend help out sometimes. My concern is that the bare flat aluminum might resonate like a drum skin going down the road and could act like a big heat sink when you're trying to stay warm at night. Do you think you could find a few spare minutes to cover them in some kind of fabric or thin carpet? If you can do that and maybe throw a layer of insulation on the backside, it'll probably be a lot more comfortable.

Sorry. I know I'm like a nosy neighbor, poking my head over the fence and signing you up for more work...

In reply to DarkMonohue :

no no, I was thinking the same thing!  It's going to be loud as heck, and I was also thinking it could reflect a TON of light back at me if the sun hits it right.  I'm not going to have any spare time anytime soon, but I think I'm putting it on the list for "carp I need to do"

That being said, I touched up the passenger side a little today.  I extended the cutouts for the door handles a little and then ran a file over all the edges to smooth things a bit (also installed the window crank handle):

Having finished that side, I went and did the driver's side as well (second verse, same as the first)

I also changed the oil while all this was going on.  Having that one drip on my drain plug being a failure at the last inspection, I wanted things good and try for when I made myself a silicone gasket.  I didn't have any more copper crush gaskets, so I made a silicone one out of Toyota's FIPG and a layer of vaseline.  Once the FIPG was dry I pulled the drain bolt back out, cleaned off the vaseline, and tightened everything back down (squishing the silicone in place).  The drain bolt is darn tight and the silicone didn't disintigrate, so I'll check in the morning for leaks.  (ah, farm fixes...)

The big problem now is my truck still looks like this:

and my darn shocks still haven't arrived!

If they're not here by tomorrow, I'll tighten back down my front shock mounts and put the tires back on.  No time for a shakedown before this run, so every squeek/noise/crunch/grind is going to 100% have my attention as I drive to the border with Dr. Julias stuff here shortly...

Man, you ever have one of those days in the garage where if you could catch half-a-break then you could load the rest up and donate it to Ukraine?  That was today.

First, I'm still waiting for the Bilsteins to arrive.  The car is on jack-stands and we're running out of days until our run.  To keep things moving, I had bought some bulbs for those new corner markers I put in.  I thought installing a lightbulb was something so easy that even I could do it.

I was wrong.

Here's what they look like:

and here's where i ended up...

See, the problem is these new corner markers use two bulbs.  One for the turn signal, and one for the clear corner marker (it comes on when you turn on the lights).  The old corner markers just had one bulb that came on when you turned on the lights.  To make the change, I had to splice in a new pigtail.

The problem is, that pigtail used the same ground wire for both the turn signal light bulb AND for the corner marker light bulb.  So when I hit the turn signal AND had the lights on (to make sure it all worked before moving on to the other side), everything stopped working...

Luckily, I've screwed up enough aftermarket car stereo installs to know exactly what went wrong (dash lights and tail lights went out too).  With both the turn signal on, AND the lights on, both were trying to ground themselves to the same wire and the fuse blew.

Bugger.

I took out the new light bulbs, and put in a new fuse only to have it blow as well.

So I took out the new light bulbs, removed the pigtails, and disconnected my stereo (that's not currently working anyway) and the fuse is currently surviving.

I figure that's enough for today.  Time to put down my tools and go back in my house before I screw up something I can't fix.

Good times.

(Mrs. Hungary called.  The shocks arrived at our doorstep right after I left for work.  With the day's luck like that, I'm certain I made the right call when I decided to stop touching things.)

Ooh!  I almost forgot, we did have some good news.  A friend dropped this off on my doorstep yesterday!

I sorted and organized everything into ziplock bags so Dr. Julia wouldn't have to deal with a mess.  Lots of good combat/compression bandages and the like.  Some electrolyte drink mix, and some small stuff (like safety pins and bandaids)

That purple packet is a beet/horseradish mix that I'm absolutely in love with.  I'm making cold cuts tomorrow and this is 100% going on them laugh

(I'm also excited about the spicy mustard as getting anything horseradish-ish around here that actually burns my nose is few and far between)

The chocolate though?  I gave that stuff to Mrs. Hungary and the Hungarlings cheeky

ok, LOTS to catch up on.  Here goes:

First, our budget update.  I can not believe that tomorrow is already the end of the month!

Ok, so we have 17,228 in our funds for this month for Vikki's "Mother's and Babies" and this isn't the "bad news" it appears to be as a LOT of donors who usually donate to this fund I've noticed donated to Dr. Julia's fund this month and that was a HUGE success!

In fact, we can skip right down the list and talk about that.  So the tires, jack (one scissor, one bottle type), tire iron, and air compressor were all delivered but I honestly cant remember if I posted that some local friends of mine took a collection and had a BIG box of bandages (compressed, combat, etc) and other misc medical supplies that they were able to collect.  It was really the icing on the cake for this run, and I was SO happy to receive it.  In the end we had $545 in cold hard cash available to send to our favorite Doctor!

When asked what she wanted us to purchase with the money she responded with "basic meds" and sent Vikki a list.  The goodies I drove into country are at Vikki's house at the moment while Dr. Julia transfers from (what I can now tell you was) Avdiivka and to her next assignment (location yet unknown).  Everything will be sent together and I really cant wait until she gets this one.  It's going to be GREAT

Before we get into our run updates, here's our list of links.  The website hasn't been updated this month, as I've simply been too darn busy to get to it.  There's been a schedule change at work and it's thrown my normal routine into complete disarray.  I'm adjusting though, and we'll get back to something that resembles "normal" again, I'm sure

Dnipro Express website:  DniproExpress.com

Vikki's "Mothers and Children" (Monthly Sustainment):  paypal@gmail address (Hungarian Forint)

Julia, our "adopted" medic:  Yahoo paypal address (I'll keep this open and send any money that's received, but will put an official fundraiser on hold for now)

P.O. Box address available for any parties interested in shipping items directly to me in Hungary (PM me for address, it is safe to share)

Hospitallers!:  Contact restored!  Tourniquets, israeli bandages, chest vents, and decompression needles are all needed.  We can order locally, or you can purchase and ship them to me for in-person delivery on our next run (Late April, 2024).  PM for details.

Currently being worked on:

Freight forwarding:  I've cast some lines out into the pool but nothing's biting.  I haven't given up and hopefully will have something for us sooner rather than later.

Rebeka M. Collection is ongoing.   I haven't heard anything on this in about 6-months.  I'm officially calling this channel "dead".  Please consider Dr. Julia for any future aid you'd like to send to Ukrainian medical personnel.

Currently Closed:

Rebekah M:  Contact lost, and I was unable to reestablish.  Effort moved to Julia

Kisgorbo Refugee Shelter:  Warm wishes to all who took refuge.  May you all find peace and prosperity wherever you are.
