Considering, yet again, replacing the venerable NA with something that seats 4, has a power retractable roof, and is somewhat fun to drive. VANOS scares the E36M3 out of me though.

Other considerations that I'm missing?

VANOS isn't that scary. E46 is really what you want. The 20-25 year old Mitsubishi 3000GT Spyder had a retractable hardtop. Otherwise you're looking at Pontiac G6, Lexus SC430, Chrysler Sebring/200, Volvo C70, or the VW Eos for normal stuff.

The Infiniti G35/37 came with one, too, though. That might be the closest thing to a 3-Series out of your choices.

If you decide on an EOS, I cal help if you have issues with the top. Inwas one of the 5 trainers that canvassed north america training the VW techs on the top system n

I agree on the E46 comment. Relatively cheap, relatively plentiful, and good independent BMW shops are not too hard to locate, which keeps maintenance costs in line. Comfortable ride, fun enough to drive, look good. That's where I'd start.

Wait, are you looking for a power retractable hardtop, or just any power roof convertible? Because the E46 didn't have a hardtop, the E9x was the first one with that.

I always really liked the second-gen Volvo C70, and they are rather uncommon around here. Don't know a dang thing about them though.

Dang, I think you are right. I can picture an E46 PRH, but I can't actually remember them existing. My mistake.

So here are all of the reasonable choices. E90, Z4, and F30 BMW, Lexus IS, Infiniti G37, C70, Miata, MB SL and Slk, Mitsubishi 3000GT if you adventurous and the Chrysler 200.

We went though this last year and landed on the E90 and a 5 year extended service contract.

They hard top convertibles scare me but are really the only way I could deal with a convertible as a daily in this part of the world.

Mercedes and Chrysler share a hardtop system, that is enough to make me pee a little at the thought of working on them; you should see the number of micro switches and various other crap necessary to make it work. Plus the rear section of the top takes up almost all the available trunk space. No experience with the rest of them.
