Both of my grandfathers used Craftsman tools, so naturally I bought craftsman tools when I started doing my own wrenching "back in the day".

I've been going through my tool box lately and trying to get everything in an organized fashion.  I thought I'd pop on e-bay and pick up some used wrenches to replace my missing items, and holy smokes!

This 9pc USED wrench set is over $120!!!

As nice as it'd be to pick up the few odds and ends I need to finish my "craftsman wrench set" I'm almost thinking I should sell what I got and go buy a Husky set for half the price.  What gives?  Are people really paying this for used wrenches?

No. I pick up singles from pawn shops fo a dollar or two.

I doubt anyone is paying that. I mean, how far is that price from what you would pay for a used snap on set? Especially now with Sears collapsing, and the craftsman name being sold, who knows what the warranty situation will be in a few years. But I will say this, I bought a full set of craftsman tools in high school (late 90s) then went to work as a full time tech for 10 years. The wrenches are the only thing that remains from that original set, and they still work great. That set will probably out live me.

Those wrenches aren't even that old, just used.  The seller is trying to collect on the Made in USA feeding frenzy.  But, OLD Craftsman stuff can bring big bucks.

What do they SELL for? Look at the completed items on Ebay, rather than current listings.

People can list things for any price they want to.

I have the bigger set of those wrenches in inch and metric and they are really nice.  Think Snap On quality, prefect chrome, with a slightly thicker beam which to me makes them more comfortable.  They are also "long pattern" meaning they are about an inch or 2 longer than a comparable sized standard wrench (the good ol "Raised Panel") for extra leverage and reach.

They are the Professional line, no longer produced, no longer available at all since they are now made in China.  I love mine, but treat them carefully.  If they are broken or lost they can't be replaced easily.

If something was to happen to the whole set, I would replace them with Snap-On.  A comparable used Snap-On set is around 2 bills used and 400 or so new.

Crazy. At that point, spring a bit more for a used set of Mac Precision Wrenches. I have a set and love them.

I'm not concerned about my wrenches matching.     As long as the size I need is available.

the wrench drawer of my toolbox is a hodgepodge of Craftsman, Gearwrench, and Pittsburg with the random "high-end" thrown in from the flea market.

I figured it was probably because of "made in USA".  Especially when i can buy a new 8 piece set for about $11.

time to go look for a pawn shop, i guess smiley

Pawn shop lol. The one by me has their prices way out of line. I might as well buy new.

I did find a Snap-On  3/8” ratchet and extension at a garage sale for a Dollar each last week.

I buy my E36 M3 from tractor supply, lowes or home depot.

Never managed to break a normal wrench before.

The professional grade Craftsman wrenches are nicer and are worth more than the standard issue, but I don't think by that much.

I have some vintage "Made in Japan" Craftsman tools from my son's grandpa, was an interesting find when we were settling his estate. Apparently they're not great tools but collectors like them.

sorry i didnt get this sooner, I'm on the road  with limited interwebz wink

I really appreciate the offer but i was able to fill in the blanks i needed for 13.50.  I caught a pretty good deal on a lot of random wrenches that happened to have what I needed with only a couple wrenches surplus.  (mine weren't the "professionals", just the run of the mill craftsman)
