Had to do it.
My wife still talks about the 1979 concert she attended when she had 3rd row seats and took pictures on her Kodak 110. She still has the pictures.
I egged her on to get tickets.......when she can't hear me well I blame this concert.
What?
I think I heard David was back with them for this tour, but that might be wishful thinking. I never did like Hagar.
I last saw them in concert in 1984. I was 17, and four of us piled in a ratty old Volvo to make the trek to Columbia. I'm pretty sure my hearing started failing at that concert. They literally cracked the roof in the place.
Great show. I'd be tempted if they were coming close to me.
I've been among those eagerly anticipating a reunion with DLR... but gawd, he was dreadful at the Jimmy Kimmel thing. His voice is gone – but it was that crazy, rictus grin that was the most off-putting.
In reply to Lesley:
I can slide him some slack for the voice because he had his nose packed full of gauze from the opening sequence where he bashed it in with the mic stand but the creepy vibe he is giving off with the open-mouthed chewing gum and pedo smile ... it reminds me of Herbert the Pervert from Family Guy.
"That's a nice muscly thrown' arm ya got there... you know, if you get sweaty and wanna take your shirt off that'd be just fine"

In reply to Lesley:
Had to go to the dictionary for "rictus". Not even a big word, just one that I have never run across.
I agree that it seems DLR's voice is gone. Saw him on something a few years ago and it was horrible. Think I'll stick to the studio recordings and skip the concert.
In reply to Streetwiseguy:
Oh, he was creepy in a over the top. berkeleyed up way, but he was a hell of a showman.
In reply to Toyman01:
Never suggested he wasn't a showman. That was part of what made him creepy.
For the Sammy haters, I think this is one of the best by VH, close behind Hot for Teacher.

I await the abuse.
In reply to Streetwiseguy:
No abuse from me. Great song. Between the two I'll still pick DLR. Probably because that's the Van Halen I grew up listening to. It just sounds "right" to me.
He was a crazy SOB though.
Somewhere on youtube there is a video of the tour Sammy and DLR did together. Watch it and you'll find out just how berkeleyed up he was. I don't remember what it was called.

We were watching old VH vids the other day. Wife is crazy about him, (we do have a son named Eddy) and I commented on how both he and Dave were dressed like chicks. Eddy was wearing a pantsuit.
I wonder if they're coming to Detroit. I might have to crack my wallet open. I've not seen them with DLR, and just couldn't bring myself to go see them with that pansy from Extreme.

Yep. The tickets went on sale today, they are playing Pine Knob on September 4.
I seriously thought about getting tickets. I've seen them so many times. Saw them with Sammy a bunch, Cherone once, and Dave once. I've also seen Dave solo a couple of times, and the "Sam and Dave" tour in 2002. You might say I'm a fan. But after the last show, I don't feel that overwhelming desire to go anymore. IMO, it's not the same without Micheal Anthony. Not just his bass playing (Wolfie is a fine bass player), but his backing vocals and general onstage antics. And, as others have mentioned, Dave just doesn't have it anymore. As much as I love VH, at this point I think I'd rather just enjoy the old albums, and not see the current version live.
they should do a tour with all 3 of their singers: DLR could get the crowd going in the beginning, people could go buy t shirts and beers while they did the Gary Cherone stuff, and they could close with Sammy..
The Van Halen you are looking for... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cn8APTMyKsg

IMO, save your money and watch youtube with the volume all the way up.

This is kinda what I was thinking. I don't want to see them as tired old men, and I really think I'll miss Michael Anthony. He was quite the on-stage presence.
I heard Sammie hagar perform at the America's cup show case a few years ago in San Francisco. I have to tell you it was painful to listen to. Thank god we got the tickets for free.
Honestly, I haven't found too many of the older bands that have actually put on a good show. Its kind of sad actually. Just quit when you are ahead.
I saw them a couple years ago when they toured w/ DLR, Eddie ,Alex and Wolfgang.
Dave's voice lasted about 4 songs 'til he was about done. He blamed the HVAC in The Verizon Center for this; "Turn the blowers off! turn the blowers off!"
Then came a bizarre and lengthy video interlude about Dave and the working dogs he raises. During this time I think he was backstage gargling with Chloraseptic. When the were back on he was marginally improved, but he still didn't have it. Eddie's guitar solo was, well, long. And Alex's drum solo was over a sequenced Latin rock track and was both odd and long.
The whole spectacle highlighted the absence of Michael Anthony. He was a way bigger part of the Van Halen Sound than he's given credit for.

Wow, that makes me feel old.
It's sad, because I was a Van Halen DLR fan all the way back to the 70s. But that gum! Oy! He was skeevy back then too, but it worked. Really athletic too, those high kicks and jumps were so much a part of their persona. Now he's just icky.
