1. I have a Tracfone with a record function AND a cheap audio recorder. I want to download the recorded material from them both to my Windows PC. It has no USB, only a single jack for a headset or athe other for a microphone. I can plug that into the microphone socket on the desktop but I can't figure out how to get the PC to recognize the incoming signal and save it. How do I do that?
2. Similar problem with a iPad. If I connect the iPad using a micro/USB cable connector, how to I download files to the PC? I haven't tried it yet but assume I'll have the same problem.
Get CDEX, it's free. Then Tools, Record from Analog Input. Hook your audio sources to either the microphone or line in (experiment) on your PC. Play on the source, record on the PC.
For the iPad thing, I think you need the apple ap on your PC. Then you can transfer files. Or mail them to yourself.

Not sure if it is available on modern versions of window, but the antique versions had sound recorder. This would allow you to record from the mic input and create a wave file.
Will check when I get in the office to see if it's still there in win7. On my phone now.
Edit. Win 10 you need to get it from the win a store
Audacity is your answer for question number 1. Use line in, not Mic - the mic jack is amplified and will boost the incoming signal where it will start clipping, losing quality as a result.
For Question 2 - once you get the iPad connected to your PC you should be able to see the iPad's storage in Windows Explorer just like a flash drive. You may need to do a bit of poking around until you find your files but it should be possible to find them and just copy them.
+1 for Audacity and using the line-in. You'll still lose some quality this way though. There are plenty of phone apps for recording sound that will create a file that you can transfer over USB/BT/etc.
iOS devices don't offer USB storage access from the factory from what I understand, you'd normally only be able to transfer things through iTunes, although you can add the capability with an app.
Everyone's covered #1 well enough, for #2 I'd recommend getting either Google Drive or DropBox setup on the Ipad and your PC. Then the files will automagically appear on both devices. It's way easier than trying to use itunes (to be fair, I haven't had to use this in a few years).
