I was(reluctantly) elected to our village board this year. Not because I really had the desire to do so, but because I kept having people ask me to run, and if they felt that way then maybe I owed it to them.

It's astonishing how nearly every other trustee, and many elected officials from other communities I've met are there simply because they have a vendetta or seek higher political power.

Secondly, I've come to realize lawyers are truly the smartest people among us. Think about it: They are the ones who actually write all the laws and ordinances, then argue over their meaning and/or legitimacy, and finally either rewrite the laws or write new ones. It's a truly self-perpetuating cycle.

That's not meant as a condemnation of lawyers either, but both those observations really demonstrate how berkeleyed we are from a political standpoint.
