We live in a society of "Oh, its broken. Lets by a brand new part or throw it away and buy a whole new one." From TVs to cars, this seems to be what we do.
Not me. Not today. The 87 4Runner had a Sony XPlode head unit in it when I bought it. Nice, and it had a AUX port. The buttons began to stick and then stopped working altogether. This truck has 447,000 on it, and god knows how much Montana dust is packed in the Sony. Used face plates are $35 on E-Bay, with new ones at $45. So I replace it with a $30 junkyard JVC because it had pigtails still attached and I'm cheap.
Everything works great...except the AUX port which is super egged out. Looks like I'm back to replacing a face plate, or maybe not. I get a hair up my ass to crack open the plate and see what the AUX jack looks like. Maybe I can buy a replacement at Radio Shack or rig something up. What do I care? I'm probably going to have to replace it anyway.
I pop it open and take a look. Doesn't look like I can take the jack apart without destroying it. Maybe I can practice on the Sony. Hot damn! It looks like they're the same, exact components. I fire up the soldering iron and try to figure a way to heat up the 3 prongs at the same time. No dice. But I figure out that if I heat one prong and work it out as the solder cools, I can work around it in a circle until its out.
Reassembly is the reverse of disassembly. Ha.
Works like a charm. I didn't even have to leave the garage. Additional dollar outlay: $0.00.
