So 80,000 people of the 1.4 billion in China were infected, of which 70 percent are recovered and most of those had mild symptoms. They are now more concerned with travellers bringing the virus back and they have now closed the emergency hospitals. That seems to be a perk, and also to put the current panic over here into perspective.
Just got the news last night that I officially furloughed as my place of business is completely closed down until further notice. As a goodwill gesture, I am getting two weeks full pay before they tap into my accrued PTO. This means almost six weeks at full pay to sit at home and do nothing and then I can collect unemployment if it goes further than that. Kinda screws up my vacation plans later in the year, but I will deal with that when it happens.
Remember, I work for MGM Resorts, my casino alone has over 6000 employees... so that is a fair amount of coin they are forking out for those two weeks
a few people can only board a plane, less air pollution because people stay at home so less vehicles on the streets
If you have direct TV (and possibly others) the premium channels have been turned on. Something for people to watch while they're stuck at home for the next while.
In reply to ShawnG :
The lack of a vaccination to this point is why we are where we are today. When a covid vaccine is developed the whole thing will blow over. I wonder if that will cause the antivaxxers to rethink? Nah.
All the little angels at my school are gone for a month but I still have to go there every day. Silliness. Complete silliness.
I don't know if you all follow the Johns Hopkins map but their graph showed an interesting change of direction today.
Less then holiday traffic volume, especially for the DC area. $1.99 for regular gas, $2.25 for diesel.

I got off work (from home) and changed an engine mount in the RX-7 then went for a test drive at 5:00. There was creepily little traffic.
Christopher Titus is releasing his specials on YouTube for free during this situation. One special a week, with a promise of when touring can start again he'll be doing one show a week where all the money will go to the club staffs for helping make him rich.
I sell air pumps. I suggested to the factory that our pumps are ideal for hospital ventilators. The factory is now working on a fast and easy to manufacture ventilator. I would love to be part of a win for mankind as well as a win for me.
My lady friend and I both work for a small community college, though at two different campuses (campi) in two different counties. She has to answer phones from home this week. I'm off completely. We're getting paid as normal for now. The only downside is the guilt. Lots of people hurting out there in lots of ways. Be excellent to each other.
Probably belongs in the First World Problems thread, but...
I decided to break the cabin fever and take advantage of the lighter traffic by taking the RX out for a drive again. Happily cruising on a 2 lane road until I come up to a group of at least 20 motorcycles who are acting like idiots and going slowly. I was cool with that since they were in the right lane, but then the BMW in front of me decides to slow to a crawl to record a guy doing wheelies. Yep, I was in a 2 car traffic jam. Some of the bikers appreciated the RX though.
With humans staying in, animals are coming out. I've seen photos of dolphins and swans appearing. It seems they are happy with us gone.

Yes, there seems to be a lot of bot accounts signing up to various forums as well.
Was watching the cable financial channel for the ticker on Friday and the Trump conference came on and was getting bummed about things. Found Caddyshack on the tube and that greatly improved life in the lockdown.
Two positive thoughts -
This thing is burning through the US at an incredible rate and I know multiple people that have been sick with the symptoms and never tested. What we're seeing in the case count is the tip of the iceberg. The negative side of this is that we'll lose a lot of old folks, but we'll get through it more quickly than expected and get back to living.
And if I'm right about all this, there will be a buyer's market in meticulously kept old low mileage Vettes later this year...

Since I'm dead center in such a would-be vette market I found that darkly humorous.
Strange perk...
I was just talking to someone who lives near the Ohio Turnpike. They can not actually see the turnpike from their window but more like their neighborhood backs up to the turnpike.
She stated that while outside yesterday with her dog there was an eerie oddness. She could not quite put her finger on it but then realized it was the silence. General traffic on the turnpike is so down that the normal levels of some traffic noise is gone.
