Nutshell: I'm redoing mom and dad's bathroom. The room has tile wainscot the whole way around about 46" high. Mom wants wainscot paneling put over that tile.

Bath Fitter had been out to put a new enclosure in the shower/tub, and they used a butyl tape to adhere the panels to the tile. I mentioned the wainscot project I was going to do next and they said "so you'll be using this butyl tape too." Yup. That's what I planned. But I can't find it anywhere. I found TONS of butyl tape, but only the kind used as flashing and metal roof caulk.

I gave up for a day and tried liquid nails, but of course that was no good. I tried calling Bath Fitter, but I got a receptionist for a national corporation who had no idea how to direct my call.

WHERE CAN I FIND THIS F*ING BUTYL TAPE?

so bath fitter AKA cover the problem without actually fixing it used some tape and you want to mimic their tomfoolery?

get some good adhesive caulk and be done. Loctite PowerGrab is 1000X better than any liquid nails product. OSI Quad(window/door/siding caulk) sticks to anything known to man, including hootuses, stays flexible and does not dry out like liquid nails, and is generally the most awesome thing on the face of the earth. plus it requires so much force to get out of the tube that next time you touch yourself it'll feel like someone else. your hand will be that much stronger.

CR Laurence is where I get it.

If they won't sell it, check your local glass shop.

You want to glue pressed wood over a tiled wall in a bathroom?

I've avoided questioning the wisdom of this plan almost all day. Getting harder all the time...

Its what mom wants. Period. Once its up, its fine. I've done it in several bathrooms before and it has held up for years.

Here's what I ended up doing. I pulled the lowest row of tiles and put underlayment in its place. Then I added a 2" strip of underlayment above it. That gave me the ability to nail top and bottom. Returned the liquid nails and bought loctite power grab. I glued the snot out of it, then nailed top and bottom.

So far so good. The panels that have had the day to dry are glued HARD. I gave one a tug and it wasn't moving. Once all the seams are caulked and the corner trim is in place it should be bulletproof. Tomorrow will be milling chair rail and fabbing up some oak casings that she wants. I have a few billion feet of oak from when dad timbered the back 40, so that means I get to dust off the old planer and see if she works.

I tried to talk her into removing the tile and using real wainscot, but she didn't want that.

Progress so far. Shoe molding is temporarily in place, but it will come out when the linoleum guy comes. No corner trim yet because I'll wait until the chair rail and cap trim is in place and hit the corners then.

There are two problems with mom's thinking: 1) she's a germophobe. To her, regular "real" wainscot has a seam every 8" and she can't abide that many germs hiding where she can't get them. Its also why she refuses a tile floor... grout soaks up bacteria in her eyes. Dear mom, if grout soaks up bacteria, it will also soak up bleach. Problem solved. 2) For some reason, she can't handle painting wood. To her, if you're going to use real wood, it should be pretty and polyurethaned. So if I tore down the tile and put up actual wainscoting, she would feel bad painting it.

I stopped asking. I just made it happen.

wait till dad splashes pee on the wainscoting and it molds. mom's head will explode :)

older guys have the same aim as my 3 year old. hell most guys have the same aim as him. i miss occasionally.

looking good though, good idea removing the bottom row for a nailer. and you'll never have to worry with the power grab as far as i've experienced.

It splashes for sure. Won't mold. Sealed and three coats of paint.
