Most interesting one I ever saw was at Quaker City Drag Strip back in the 60's. Little Altered class car with a SBC left the line and missed second. Blew the clutch and flywheel, which flew out in pieces. One of the larger pieces went into the asphalt and stuck up in the air. Track worker walked over to retrieve the piece and discovered how hot a flywheel can get. Screamed, danced, I felt sorry for him, but stupid does hurt.

I'll have to dig up the pics of a Pontiac 389 that I was given to strip some parts off of. It exploded in spectacular fashion. 3 or 4 rods snapped, the cam broke into 4 chunks, stuff blew out the block, and the oil pan looked like a Alien chest-burster tunneled its way out. 
I've also seen quite a number of awesome failures from working at Autozone for a few years through college. 
Drove home from Bellingham, Washington to Portland, Oregon on that. That's 266 miles of I-5.

Dad has a crank snout off of one of the L20B's used in his ITB 200SX. Cracked right along the second main bearing. I'll see if I can snap a pic as its pretty cool. Car came into the pits rattling after being on-track, once we saw the crank pulley move in/out as the engine speed changed, it was shut off and pushed to the pits. Tough damned motors.
Quite a vast improvement on the engine. LOL
I had a friend who had an old Fox Body Mustang with a Powerdyne supercharger on it. Didn't have a tensioner for the blower belt. Used our 425lb friend and a 4' piece of tubing to put tension on it before tightening the blower down. He went for a test drive down the 2222 hill in Austin. It's basically a huge hill with crazy incline. He went blowing down the hill and then turned around and came screaming up again. Blew the motor about half way up. Was able to coast the rest of the way and up around a curve to pull over safely from what I'm told. Crank came out in 3 pieces, gave a rod a 90* twist and "S" shape. Never seen that before. I need to see if he has any pics of that carnage...
I don't have pics of the bearings that I spun or the oval connecting rods, but how about all the wrenches that I broke during the repair process?
Are magnetic oil drain plugs supposed to look like this?
I didn't do this. It was in a car when I bought it.
