A crude car bomb of propane, gasoline and fireworks was discovered in a smoking Nissan Pathfinder in the heart of Times Square on Saturday evening, prompting the evacuation of thousands of tourists and theatergoers on a warm and busy night. Although the device had apparently started to detonate, there was no explosion, and early on Sunday the authorities were still seeking a suspect and motive.
scary stuff. My sister used to live very close.

I have friends who just moved about a block from Times Square this weekend.

I was in Times Square last weekend, stayed at the Mariott Marquis that was partially evacuated due to this bomb. I guess I dodged one too - that would have really berkeleyed up my vacation!
yes, but would have given you something to talk about for decades
Luckily I got early work on Saturday. I was on my way home at 7 and it hadn't been reported on the radio yet. I'm glad everything worked the way it was supposed to and no one was hurt.
anybody find it suspecious it was done on "may day"?
Glad it was no worse than that. But it's yet another reason I don't want to live up there.
my friends and I built better boomers when we were 12, my guess is at worst, there might have been a car fire and a couple of flame fountains. it would of taken a long, long time to pop off those tanks setup that way, if ever. Fortunately, this guy was a complete moron. though he did get ALLOT of press, which may of been his goal. who knows.. if there's a terrorist "Fail" blog, that dude just made the front page. hopefully they'll fry his sorry ass.
yeah, youre unlikely to ever get a modern LPG tank to fail explosively. They have a safety valve that will melt and slowly let the LPG escape as a 2 or so foot jet out the front before the tanks internal pressure can cause it to fail catastrophically...toss in some "fertilizer", some gasoline in a few plastic cans, and some store bought fireworks...none contained properly for instant combustion - the most likely cause of any explosion would have been from the nissans own fuel tank, and a fire ABOVE that tank would take a long time to heat up the tank enough to really explode.
The 700 club (ground breaking journalism there - saw it as I was flipping around last night) had some turd who claimed to be their terrorism analyst (srsly?). He reported that it was most likely an attack on the viacom building since they own south park who made fun of some religious group a year ago?!?! that was the best they could come up with...damnit the media blows
The Today show had a guy on that basically stated "Yes, the suspect apparently went to Pakistan, but if he went to a bomb building camp, he apparently didn't pay attention in class."
Awesome.
Maybe he was using HL2/L4D2 as a bomb-building simulator ![](/media/img/icons/smilies/crazy-18.png)
My boss' family had a wedding there. A guy known to be a bullE36 M3ter went out for a smoke and came back in saying something about a bomb, and nobody believed him ![](/media/img/icons/smilies/laugh-18.png)
A lot of people are blaming South Park. Last week they ran an episode on Mohammad and some group of nuts vowed revenge. Apparently this guys notes were all backwards. From using the wrong type of fertilizer and buying the car with his real name and address to waiting a few days to flee the country.
But your mayor (who wants to ban spray paint) was saying that he thought it had to be someone who didn't like Obamacare, implying one of those nutty TEA Party grandmothers did it after a meeting.
