I came across the listing for a job while looking for a place to stay with my family this summer.  Bearskin lodge(way up north in the boundary waters area) is looking for a couple to live on site and manage the place.  You get to live in the wilderness.. help run a cool resort..

Resort Couple:  Summer or potential for full-time.  Because of our housing situation, one of our ideal staffing situations is to hire a couple to live in what is known as “the big house,” a cabin at the end of our lake in the staff housing area. Generally our couple fills two necessary jobs, a staff member who can work at front desk/housekeeping and a staff member who can do heavy lifting, carry canoes, work with boats and motors, mow the lawns, maintain the campground as well as work at the front desk occasionally and help with housekeeping when needed. Fun job, fun place to live together and enjoy the BWCAW.  It’s been a pretty happy lifestyle for most of the couples who lived here.

If I were younger without kids and a career...  I'd be tempted

Where were they on career day?  I had no idea this was an option.

Reminds me of when I heard about the new Extreme E offroad series, I thought, "I'm among the best qualified people in the world to be a driver in this series. I wonder if I could get hired..."

Then I remembered that I'm not handsome or charismatic enough to be a pro racer frown

My first thought was the Craigslist serial killer who lured people out to the woods for a quick murder n' mug with a similar job ad.

Not the dream. MN has great weather for 5-6 months of the year but is just about the buggiest place I've ever been when it is not winter. Then the winters are long, dark and cold. No thanks as much as I like doing all the things in the job description. Maybe as a summer job, but zero interest in wintering over up there.

Not to mention cold.  40 - 50 below wind chills are not uncommon up there.  In addition medical attention is limited,  for almost anything people drive 4-5 hours to south to Duluth’s hospital.  Not to mention the frequency of being completely snow bound.

On the other hand life is wonderful if you like wilderness, hunting, fishing, canoeing. And Don’t mind being alone for the winter.

My wife’s grandparents did it for decades. You get to know your guests pretty well and live a very healthy life.   The forest Rangers like to know things but understand when you have to shoot a bear that will not leave the cabins alone.  Ask before cutting down any tree but there is plenty of windfall to make into firewood. Though enough firewood to get through the winter will keep you plenty busy all fall and into the winter.

There is a lighthouse you volunteer to look be in for a summer week - Door County, Wisconsin- Rock Island.

Bare minimum - my wife said she wouldn’t go if we were picked.   We’re from Illinois - we won’t get picked.

No way it is 4 hours to Duluth, assuming no snow and/or downed trees. More like 2-3.

Still a very valid point though.

In reply to mtn :

Just heard a piece on MPR about a week or so ago how people travel 4-5 hours to Duluth in the winter because the local hospital doesn’t have a lot of things that are  common in bigger hospitals.  so yes we are talking about winter.

One of my daughters classmates Comes from the kerfoots who started the gun flint lodge.   Her dad grew up there and guided for years in the BWCA.  Is it isolated?   Sure. But that’s the point.   I mean why do people move to Alaska.

There was an ad on Sacramento Craigslist for a one year position at a fly in hotel in Alaska when I moved out there. Check in March or April. They refused to even talk to me because I wasn't 30 at the time.

I'd say this is as close to alaska living as you can get in the US..  remote off grid..  acres and acres of just woods and lakes..  not many people realize that.
