I may need to build a website really, really fast for a job interview. I have a domain name but no host. If anyone's willing to field some really noob questions off-board I'd appreciate it.

Wordpress, a free Wordpress theme, and a Wordpress host. Watch YouTube tutorials for the specific things you want. "Wordpress ecommerce site" "Wordpress resume site" "Wordpress portfolio site" etc etc

+1

Wordpress is open source and free. A number of providers will bring your site up for you on their hosting.

I use 1and1.com for hosting, pretty simple and straight forward. You can try for the full wordpress install or opt for a simple built in 1and1 wordpress version.

I asked the same questions 6 months or so ago and started looking at options but I ended up using iWeb. It came with the computer and was super fast and easy. I finally decided to at least look at it before spending money and lots of time and found out it did more than I needed.

I've built websites before but this was so easy it wasn't worth getting my hands dirty. Plenty of different looking shells that have some very neat automation built into it.

99% of all websites these days could be run on a wordpress site, and most of them would have gone up faster, cheaper, and be more stable had they used it

it's also free and saying the community is robust would be a gross understatement.

learn how to use wordpress and get a host (1and1 has been decent for me) and never be left behind again when it comes to quality website design

You can do things like one click complete SEO packages and whatnot. You may not know what that is now, but you probably will eventually.

wordpress:

http://www.transformology.com/

http://www.kimonhotelathens.com/

http://www.altimea.com/

Probably all of these paid for someone to design their "theme", which imo is worth it, and should be the only thing you pay for.

The only SEO package worth having is the Yoast setup.

Search Engine Optimization is the devil's tool. It is why we have canoes here.

When I come to power, the first ones to face the firing line will be people who do SEO.....well, maybe second. First, we shoot whoever thought that the juke was a better idea than a modern datsun 510.

There is good seo and bad seo. Canoes are bad seo. Good seo is setting up your site to be easily indexed and ranked.

+1 for wordpress and good SEO (Google's cracking down on all that shady crap). Wordpress is pretty basic and easy to paint yourself into a corner with, but it's very quick and easy to set up. Make sure to set up proper security with PITA passwords, your admin panel will be brute-forced all day long.

I do as well... for multiple websites...

www.alsoranracing.com - My Race/Challenge Team

www.mintun-solutions.com - My personal website

www.goodfanbadfan.com - A website for my Brother-in-law that he hasn't really done much with

Each looks completely different, but all are based on WordPress. I'm not an expert, but happy to answer questions if you get stuck.

Do NOT use any "free" WordPress themes that do not come from WordPress.org. They are almost all invariably full of weird code that at the very least creates link-backs to shady sites, or worse.

If you want a professional looking theme, I like themeforest.net. Most of their themes only cost around $35, which is pretty cheap for what they offer. I'm not just talking about good design here, but some of them have built-in tools to customize the theme itself and page layout.

Keep in mind you'll be knocking on my door and I have guns as well.

There's a massive difference between blackhat (bad seo AKA canoes) and good seo, especially since 2/3rds of the internet is spam. SEO elevates the good content over the garbage.

I'd also like to add that a lot of power in Wordpress, development-wise, is the myriad of plugins available. Most of them are free and offer functionality that would be cost-prohibitive to pay someone to develop like we did "in the old days". Think stuff like interactive calendars and image galleries with whizbang sorting & display options, etc.

Disclaimer - I'm a fan of WordPress. I design websites for a living and I feel that they are one of the best ways forward.
