Last night, I was playing a Simon and Garfunkel Greatest Hits CD (yes, I'm old) in my car. When the album ended, I switched to Sirius XM, and the station was playing a Disturbed cover of one of the same songs I'd just heard on the CD. What are the chances of that?

Is it weird that I have the segway theme from the Bob Barker era of The Price is Right in my head?

I love S&G. I have all their stuff, and I'm only 40. I blame my Dad who was a big folk music fan back in the day. When I was old enough to start listening to records (early 80s) I listened to his collection a lot.

I love that Disturbed cover. I've often thought that a lot of the S&G lyrics had serious potential for hard-edged reinterpretation. Some pretty dark stuff in there despite the harmonies.

I have most S&G and even more Paul Simon stuff, and I'm only 26.

thankfully, that Disturbed cover song seems to have fallen out of favor and has disappeared from the rotation of the rock station we listen to at work... they were playing it like every 2 hours for a couple of weeks..

I saw Paul Simon and Edie Brickell at a car show last year.

+1 to Simon & Garfunkel!

Any other musicians had this happen -> I wrote a part, an intro of sorts. However, I would have sworn it's very similar to something I'd already heard. I was pretty sure it was Scale the Summit, but I've listened to their albums a couple times and that's not it. So now I'm wondering if maybe I dreamt it was one of their songs???

At this point I have no idea, but I dug the part back out at practice last night & we started building a song around it. I guess we'll see how that goes, and if at some point it turns out I did actually hear something similar somewhere else, we can compare how close it really is and make a decision then.

Makes me think of this: there's a new book out about The Replacements, and there was a short excerpt of it in the local newspaper a couple days ago. Here's one paragraph from the book:

Westerberg wasn’t sure he could really come up with anything truly original, but a Ritchie Blackmore quote in Guitar Player magazine — “You’re either a genius or a clever thief” — provided a spark. “I thought, Okay, I’m no genius, so I went and ripped off a bunch of Johnny Thunders songs and rewrote them. If Johnny can make two chords for ‘All by Myself,’ I’ll just change the key and call it something else.”
