The Hurricane's rookie goalie has the following stats:

1 game, 0 wins, 1 loss, 8:37 minutes played, 0 goals allowed, goals-against average of 0.00, 2 shots against, save percentage of 1.000.

So he never let a goal in, has a perfect save percentage but gets a loss due to the way the NHL tracks losses- if you are the goalie of record when the opposing team scores the winning goal, you've lost the game.

Murphy was on the bench for an extra attacker when the opponents scored the winning goal on an empty net.

He is the only goalie in the history of the NHL to have both a perfect save percentage and a loss.

That is pretty cool.

In other news, i awarded a goal to a goalie the other day. Fluke goal on a rink-long shot into an empty net, and I couldn't tell who shot it. 3 different guys were telling me that it was them, so I just gave it to the goalie instead.

I love weird trivia/facts like this.

Sports stats are retarded.
"You know John, this team has won 65.4% of the away games that are played with a start-time between 1 and 2 pm and a cloud cover of less than 50%. Further, I noticed most of the players tied their right shoes first, that does NOT bode well though..."

I hate when "analysts" pull stuff like that out, but the stat in question here is pretty interesting regardless.

baseball is the worst about silly stats. especially in the slow part of the season when the new season excitement has worn off and the playoffs are still 50+ games out. "Jim, this should be a good game for the Cards, they're historically 4 games above .500 on weekday afternoon games in a dome stadium."

There are lies, damn lies and statistics. Sports proves this.

Like mtn said, this is just an interesting stat to me regardless how how silly the stats can be.

I watched some video years ago that I'd swear talked about "the only goalie in the NHL every to score", but apparently that either wasn't true, or isn't anymore.

Baseball is so boring you have to resort to statistics to make it interesting.

i think the more accurate summation would be: "correlation does not equal causation"

Why I'm admitting this I don't know. For a very short time I had the worst Goals Against average in the NCAA. My first collegiate hockey appearance was in a game as relief for the starting goalie. He had been shelled, and the game was no longer in question. I went in to finish up the game. Took a while to counter that ugliness.

who/when did you play?

We are big college hockey fans- going to the frozen four for quite a while now.

Heck, heading to a Michgican-Michigan State game in about 40 min.

as far as i can tell, they do this with every sport.. they actually pay people to pull random statistics out of some spreadsheets to give the commentators something to talk about.

Mid 90's. A div 2 school called Saint Michael's College, in Vermont. First half of the season, I believe my gaa was 20.0. LOL

I played a full season once without my GAA hitting 1.00. The nest season I played for the same team in tournaments only, and didn't allow a single goal. Not a chance I could ever do that again

Seth, no kidding? No idea you were a fellow net-minder, but then again I never asked! With that record you could probably help out the Catamounts right now. Though I guess more scoring FROM the team might be better.

Cool goalie stat!

I'm not helping anyone out. Old and out of hockey shape. As long as I'm humiliating myself, my lacrosse GAA was actually lower that year. Our hockey team was 5-15 that year, followed by a 1-19 season. Ugly.

Always thought save percentage was a little better stat.

George, give up on UVM and go watch Norwich games, great games, well disciplined hockey.

I only go to UVM games cause I can for free and free hockey is always better than no hockey. (the wife would beg to differ!)

Played pick up Thursday night. 1.25 hours straight. 4 goals against. (Very low level group of guys and gals including the goalies!)

I scored maybe my best ever goal of my whole life last night in my pick up hour. I was playing left defence, and a really talented player (I mean he shouldn't be playing with us shlubs) made a pass through a very narrow lane from the right corner very hard. It was all I could do to stop it without it exploding off of my stick, but I did. Then as if I were Moses there was a perfect lane to the net for me to fire a laser of a wrist shot( we play no slap shots) that traveled about two feet off the ice,and billowed the net in the perfect way. I don't think the goalie had a chance even though he saw it the whole way. It truly was just the perfect shot for the situation, and I can't believe a duffer like me scored that goal.

I think maybe I may retire now. Nah 20+ years playing this hour, and now the guy in charge, I suppose I had better hold on a little longer. Hockey truly is the best sport in my opinion. Not a real stats whore, but my beloved Bruins hold a stat that in my opinion is very important. They are a + 31 in goal differential, and the nearest team is +23 with one more game played. It isn't the be all stat mind you, but still very impressive. Superior goaltending from UVM,and strong defence has made the B's who they are this, and last season.

Funny Hockey Trivia. Rally legend John Buffum was one of the first people to referee one of my hockey games.

Tim Thomas is just one of many fine goalies to come out of UVM, very happy to see him do well in the NHL. He was at UVM when I was across town at St. Mikes. You'd never see him out carousing, with the rest of the team. His teammate at the time, Martin St. Louis was a bartender at a bar called the Blarney Stone. I would say he developed the strength for his wrist shot, pouring Natty lights. Surprised he didn't end up with carpal tunnel syndrome actually......ah the good old days.

I had no idea there were so many GRMers in Vermont. That's where most of my immediate family lives now.

I'm debating trying to go to the rally school sometime around my sister's wedding next year (June 2nd).
