realize that the video is jetta specific, but might help. Also, seems that removing the badge can be a route.

HiTempGuy, thanks for the info! I was up in Duluth one Jan for a few days, lowest I saw was -30 air temp. I'm sure that extra 20 makes a huge difference. I haven't changed the PSF or ATF on that car yet, it's on my to do list once it gets a bit warmer.
DrBoost, and everybody else with dead cars, you all up and running yet?

I hope everybody else is having better luck than me, I think the Bimmer has a clogged cat .
Update : I wish it was just a clogged cat . No compression in 3 of 6 bores, and discouragingly low readings in the other 3.
The antifreeze was good, and I'm pressure testing the cooling system now, but it is holding pressure so far. I guess I'll be pulling the VC to see if there is a cam chain problem next.
The cooling system test revealed that the cooling system reservoir has a leaky tank seal. The whole cooling system was replaced last summer, so I doubt that it cracked just because it felt like it. The question now is, is it a blown HG or cracked head. And I still need to check the valve train too.

I hope you don't mind me hijacking your thread. I'm pretty sure I've got bigger problems than you now. LOL.
Wow Andy. That is pretty sucktacular! I'm sorry for the turn of events, hijack away!
In reply to XLR99: Not yet. I'm working on finishing my basement, but will install the battery later today since the cold comes back tomorrow. I just say 20F on the readout in the minivan. I haven't seen double-digits (above zero) in a week!
I pulled the VC this afternoon, everything looks like its in order with the timing chains, cams and valve lifter buckets. I'll wait for a dryer day to start pulling the head.
If it just a bad HG, I hope I can find the reason when I get open. This seemed to be a fairly healthy engine when I installed it 3 years ago.
