The entire E10 debate is starting to remind me of a political debate.

People pick sides, and don't want to change their opinion. I had it chew up some fuel lines on an old outboard I bought, but I just spent the $5 for new ones, cleaned the carb out well and moved on.

How I fixed this problem:

I realize this isn't for everyone, but I have a small lawn and I think it's great. No more gas can, no more small engine maintenance, just plug it in when you're done mowing and it's good to go for the next time. Easiest mower to turn, move, lift, raise, lower, refuel, or start that I've ever used.

In reply to MrJoshua:

When you're constantly at the parts store buying parts, they let you walk right past the counter into the back area. There was a period of about 3 months in which I was back there twice a week.

The filter I have on my mower looks like one of the old universal fuel filters you'd run in line in your engine bay.

I also installed a fuel cutoff when I installed the filter, but I neglected to run my carb dry last winter. Mower still started up fine, even though the gas smelled horribly foul.

The owner's manual I have here for a 1986 Honda Accord states that it was engineered to be tolerant of ethanol levels of up to either 10% or 15%. If those cars with the worst carburetor setup on earth can run corn squeezin's, then my mowers should be able to as well.

When you bought the mower, did you happen to inspect your fuel tank? I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't a bit on the dirty side when you bought it. Also make sure the cap is sealing properly so as to not allow excess moisture in. It shouldn't be a problem in your shed, but if you've gotten more RX7 parts, they might start fighting :p

I'm just curious what caused the granules in my float bowl. It doesn't appear to be deterioration of other parts. Are there really that many solids in the additives that would hang around when the fuel evaporates? This stuff had granules bigger than rock salt. Two 3/16" passageways in the carb were stuffed solid to the point of having to scrape them out. When the mower died I was annoyed at the piece of crap carb, now I am proud of the little bugger for running at all with most of its circuits clogged.

Leave the bowl full of fuel at the end of every season for five years and yeah, you can get big solids. The crystals formed from last years deposits are nucleation points for the next years junk.

I have used Purolator # F21124 fuel filter on the tractor and AC VDubs, it has 1/4" - 5/16" stepped inlets and outlets. Much cheaper than lawn equipment stores. Kinda long to fit a push mower tho.

So am I. It would be interesting to take the samples to some high school chemistry teacher to see if their class can figure it out. Or a local college.
