True.

And some smart-alecky young whippersnappers who are pretty sure they know better.

Every old fogie I know was once a smart-alecky young whippersnapper that thought he knew better.

Wait and see, young padawan... wait and see.

I'm an old fogey and yet I'm still a young whippersnapper when it comes to technology. I think you're wasting your life and potential if you don't take advantage of all that is available to you.

But you luddites will just love this video. You'll say it proves your point. I'll say it's funny.

Some people may have different priorities, but it doesn't mean they're wasting their lives by not having a Facebook page.

really don't think I'm wasting my life if I don't utilize FB, smart phone, or any of the other electronic gizmos out there ... maybe you can explain to me how my life will be BETTER if I do as you insist ('course that would assume that you know more about my life and how I live than I do )

I don't do that much on Facebook, but I am keeping my account. I have a number of friends and relatives in Japan. In the wake of the big earthquake, it was really hard to get through to people directly. I really appreciated everyone who posted on the book to let everyone the status of their family and our mutual friends. Likewise, when Sandy hit New York, I got reports quickly about how the relatives were doing there.

If I have one complaint about Facebook addicts, that's it. And it goes right to the heart of this discussion and that article.

Speaking strictly for myself, I do: Own a cell phone. Have broadband Internet access. Have three computers. Have a home theater system that'll knock your socks off. Own and use a GPS. Am quite conversant with computer stuff, it's not often I am stumped.

But I do not: Facebook all the time, although I do have an account. Or own a smartphone.

To me, these are tools which I use. They do not use me, which seems to be the new standard of 'cool'. As I said earlier, if that means I'm not one of the cool kids or am somehow weird or if that makes me an impossible old curmudgeon who is 'not operating at full potential', then well I guess that's where I am.

I also don't have a tattoo or piercing. That appears to be another 'cool kid' thing, I'm weird enough already that I don't need to write stuff on my body or jam weird objects in it to prove to the rest of the planet how avant-garde I am.

Yea, carguy- one of these days you need to tell us how this makes your life better. Let alone how it wastes your life by not using it.

The way you put it is just like all the rest of the "pressure" that is put upon people- "you gotta get it, it's great"- why? "because".

So if I'm not interested in "keeping it touch" with people that I've lost touch in (who knows- it could be intentional)- what's the benefit of FB?

I'm going to be on the SmartPhone thing, but certainly know that it's a luxury and not a need. It's best thing is travelling, not real life.

I don't get tattoos, either, but I did get my ear pierced 35 years ago. Haven't worn it in 30 years, but once in a while I put a small hoop in, and it catches people by surprise

When have I ever claimed to not be suspicious?

I sure hope I'm not an old fart. I'm 34. I can't remember if I thought 34 was "old" when I was in my 20's. Must be the memory going.

I already spend too much time here, and I already come off like some narcissistic e-prick wherever politics are involved. Part of my reasoning behind not having a facebook page. All I ever hear about the E36 M3 is berkeleying girl-talk about who said what and how stupid they are and how "BOY I REALLY LET SO-AND-SO HAVE IT!" I had a myspace account until the "friends I haven't talked to in a while" to "stalker ex-girlfriend" ratio started to freak me out a little.

I AM ashamed at how glued I am to my smartphone. I didn't have a cell at all until a couple years ago when we had a kid, and mama said "You fought the good fight. You've got a kid now and a piece of E36 M3 car. Go get a phone."

I started getting a little freaked watching some members of my family who can't use a computer because they resisted the technology for so long. Ex: I text my dad pics of my kid every couple days or so, and email him videos. If I want to send pics to my mom, I have to print and shlp, or have her bring up the digital photo frame I bought her for xmas a couple years ago and load them for her.

Anyway, I figure the smartphone keeps me from getting stuck in that technological gap. The technology still berkeleying amazes me.

Facebook girl talk? I'd be too tempted to waste more time than I already do.

So, Facebook (created by socially inept geek as a medium to hopefully get laid) is now the STANDARD for determining whether or not you should sleep with someone?

And the fact that I do not have a FB account makes me a potential mass murderer.

No one sees the flaws in the logic??

The only thing more shocking then this utter stupidity is that it is up for debate on this board.

Come on, guys. I thought you were smarter than this.

My life is good, with or without my smartphone. I have a cabin I get away to every once in a while- no electricity, no running water, no phone, no television, and no cell phone reception. It is absolutely glorious- peaceful in a way that can not be attained while being wired. For those of you who have no ability to unplug or get away for the electronic umbilical cord occasionally, I highly recommend it. You have no idea what you are missing. Your obsessive and addictive behavior is clouding your vision.

Don't mind me...I'm just honing my assault weapon and IED skills with my supremacist buddies.

Geez...

I dunno, I don't think Facebook will be replaced by just another website. I think its going to take a whole new medium/technology to make facebook irrelevant. I don't see it going away in the new few years.

I don't get the hate or love for Facebook. To me it is just a tool. There are other things that work just as well as Facebook for keeping in touch with people like text messages, emails, letters or phone calls but sometimes it is useful to have an extra tool.

I'm 50, I have a smartphone, i have a facebook account and neither run my life. I'm constantly amazed at the people that WON'T have either of them BECAUSE they think you HAVE to let it run you rlife if you have them. It's silly. As was mentioned, they are both tools and how you use them is what's important, not the self inflicted status of either having them OR not having them (and believe me, loudly proclaiming how little you need them is as much a cry for status as those who obsessively use them).

It's simply another way of staying in touch with friends and family spread out around the country, but you don't HAVE to be on it 24/7 to make it an effective tool for doing so. You can have it AND have quiet evenings on the porch without it, it's not an either/or situation.

I keep up with what my neices and nephews are doing, and follow my friend Greg (who is crew cheif for an ALMS car) as he goes to tracks around the country, with pictures and descriptions of the events. Same with other racing buddies around the country. And my worldwide car club for my old E38 has pictures of events and discussions that are nice to have. And yet I don't have to be on it 24/7 to have that interaction. And by the same token, friends and family can keep up with what I'm doing without me having to email and call them all individually.

And the Smartphone is great. I can do banking, email, it works as GPS, and it's a MP3 player PLUS I can use it to call people if I need to. I don't see why the tool is so demonized.
