Without going into any details, there is a certain deranged individual who's been harassing a well-respected member of my institute because he believes some utterly false and provably-bullE36 M3 claims that a certain natural disaster a few years ago has had wide-reaching damaging consequences that "us scientists" are covering it up because ... actually I have no idea why we might be doing that but I'm not going to waste any brain cells trying to think down to his level.

Anyway he went and posted the names, job descriptions, emails & contact details of our entire department on his dumb blog, including mine. He even went and highlighted the name of one of my friends, a 25-year-old grad student who he believes is one of the inner cabal of the conspiracy (hint: she isn't) and suggested his vapid followers harass her too.

To be honest I'm not particularly worried for myself about being threatened or even contacted by any of this lunatic's "fans", but I am rather annoyed that googling the name I publish scientific papers under will now show a result on his insane truther website.

The point of this post is, if you have an inkling towards "truther" lines of thinking and conspiracy theories or rhetoric, and think somehow you have secret knowledge that millions of professional scientists & researchers have conspired to cover up, and you need to EXPOSE their TREACHERY blah blah blah ... just, don't. Stop. You're not an expert. Shut off Alex Jones, close the fifty browser windows of Breitbart, go get a beer or something and chill out. Realize that if you think millions of people are WRONG and you're the ONLY ONE who knows the TRUTH, you ... probably don't know what you're talking about at all.

Don't try to damage people's lives over your delusions. That's a bad place.

(And YES, legal action is being taken about this, and no, I'm not particularly involved, and I can't comment on it in a public forum.)

(Also note: I've made this post intentionally vague as possible but if for some reason you know what this is about or know the website in question please DON'T clarify or link it here. Or, anywhere really. This bozo needs all the ignoring he can get.)

The sad thing is that I'm aware of the exact same thing going on at places locally. They manipulate videos of hearings to pretend that certain group are super duper evil and need to be taken down.

Scary.

I gave up arguing with those kinds of people. After you hit them over the head 50 times with the truth.. all you get his high blood pressure.. meanwhile they walk off thinking they won

Heads of states and large corporations that can't keep a sexual relationship between a mere two people secret are keeping vast complicated evil conspiracies completely under wraps. Makes perfect sense.

If we are supposed to keep this quiet why are we posting about it here? This thread seems like a bad start to give a bozo all the ignoring he can get. You should have posted in the ignore thread.

I work with delusional people every day. Unfortunately, the nature of this particular mental illness is such that the more proof you provide that is contrary to the delusion, the more it reinforces the patients belief. Until such time as the medications can control the worst of the symptoms, rationality and truth don't quite make it through to the correct receptors in the brain.

*this is blatant oversimplification of a much larger disorder and illness. Please take no offense. I am also not posting this in a professional capacity.

I wouldn't do it with a person online because you don't know what kind of crazy you're dealing with but in person I generally feed into them. My grandfather has been Kennedy's driver, a cameraman filming the faked moon landing, and helped Hitler flee to Argentina. I "accidentally" fired a rocket through flight 800 and botched the implosion of WTC7.

Duh. Sex sells. Spin a relationship, to distract from the real problem.

We unfortunately live in a world full of gullible people with poor skeptical analysis skills. It's probably the chemtrails dumbing us down

I'm not sure if I would be "really" worried - but I'd probably pay a little closer attention to anomalous "stuff" in my routine. Check on account stuff that could easily be hijacked with a name, address, phone and a little fib and so on. Read the logs on the router, google your name for other references, etc.

I got curious a while ago about those people. It was when the big Jade Helm military training thing was about to kick off. So I jumped down that rabbit hole for a couple days. At first I thought this had got to be the most genius work of satire ever. But, the more I read and watched, the more I realized that those people really believe that stuff. I just shook my head in disbelief until finally I couldn't stand it anymore and bowed out. There are a lot of really smart, completely crazy people out there who can suck in the gullible.

The trick is not to argue, what are you getting out of it. Just say you are concerned about the guys complaints and if he would give you an itemized list of grievances you will do your best to address them. Don't antagonize people, just be willing to have an open mind.

Meah, your rant is falling on deaf ears. You are corrupted at best, and one of "them" at worse.

I've got a few myself, including some foundations and such. Comes with the job, being pollution, laws, regulations, air toxics, etc. Googling my name brings some of them up. Honestly, it's never hurt me that I've noticed. In some circles, it's actually helped. More than once I've had a comment along the lines of "Oh, I see you've become the target of X now".

Only a few have ever bothered to find my private home and such. At that, it's never become a big enough problem to call for more than a restraining order.
