what doesn't give you the right to lay them out, then call the cops, and have them sent to jail overnight?
The simple fact that assaulting another human is not a *right*, whereas the freedom to express one's self is.
Regardless of what's a right or not, they've been pushing peoples buttons for years. One day they will push the wrong one and the person they push won't care if they go to jail or not.

Personally, I'd expand/change the definition of a hate crime such that it either included sexual orientation and employment, or so that it was defined based on any act designed to inflict fear in *any* easily-definable subset of the population ("women", "gays", "soldiers", "hispanics", "non-hybrid car owners", "roller-derby girls", "bus drivers", etc).
Welcome to Canada, please enjoy your stay (except you won't, because you'll get hauled before a hate crime commitee of un-elected people who have the power to impose whatever fines they see fit WITHOUT needing the approval of a court of law, AND if they find you "guilty" which is almost a guarantee, you have to pay the fine PLUS the person's fee's who filed the complaint).
Ya, it ain't cool. Stick to free speech for all, make sure you have enough people rounded up that are willing to block their path. In fact, if they are invading a private function, there is no reason that they can't be forcibly removed I'd think.
I don't understand the whole hate crime thing. If you do something illegal, isn't it just illegal? Is it more illegal if you hate the person you did it to?
I'm not judging it. Maybe if someone explained it to me I'd get their point. But on the face of it I don't understand.

The best thing to do with these nimrods is ignore them. When they're no longer getting headlines & attention they'll crawl back under their rocks & not be heard from again.
the only problem with that (and I agree with you) is ... there ain't no way in hell that our ratings driven media, be it the Clinton News Network, Fox , National Enquirer ... whomever.... can ignore them... if for no other reason than it brings reactions like ours
They could ignore Wesboro if we would ignore them when they put them on TV. It's just not likely to happen.

As they say on the wide world of interwebs, fixed that for ya'.

The ONLY good explanation I have heard was that in some semi backwards areas people were getting minimal sentences or not sentenced at all for committing crimes against people of certain skin colors or sexual orientations because of the judges prejudice against that particular group of people. Federal or State mandated hate crime legislation gave prosecutors a stronger weapon to punish those crimes. I still think its stupid. Most crimes have a degree of severity you can be convicted of which takes care of the need for different punishments for different motivations for the crime.

Wow, that was stupid. Think about what you say before you say it.
Wikipedia:
Opposition to Al Gore, Bill Clinton, and Hillary Rodham Clinton
During the 1992 presidential campaign, Phelps protested Hillary Rodham Clinton during a campaign speech in support of the Clinton-Gore ticket at the University of Kansas on October 14, 1992. In Bill Clinton's second presidential campaign, Phelps and the Westboro church also opposed Clinton and Gore because of the administration's support for gay rights. The entire Westboro congregation picketed a 1997 inaugural ball,[40] denouncing Gore as a "famous fag pimp."[41] In 1998, Westboro picketed the funeral of Gore's father, screaming vulgarities at Gore and telling him, "your dad's in Hell."[41]
Saddam Hussein
In 2003, before the fall of Saddam Hussein during the Iraq War, Phelps wrote a letter to Saddam praising his regime for being, in his opinion, "the only Muslim state that allows the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ to be freely and openly preached on the streets."[42] Furthermore, he stated that he would like to send a delegation to Baghdad to "preach the Gospel" for one week. Saddam granted permission, and a group of WBC congregants traveled to Iraq to protest against the U.S. The WBC members stood on the streets of Baghdad holding signs condemning both Bill and Hillary Clinton, as well as anal sex.[43]
End quote.
I'm pretty sure that Democrats are for gay marriage, and this guy isn't.

I took the liberty of fixing that for you.

It's kind of hard to believe someone hasn't already been pushed there. I can't imagine how pissed I'd be. Hell, look how worked up I get about speeding tickets!
Those crazy Westies have families too. I think the local VA should parade a few blocks worth of marines at Phelps' Mom's funeral with signs about how much they all enjoyed her company, at the same time.
Every one of those low-life losers has family and friends, and nothing stops crazy like being back-handed by mama.
what will most likely happen... somebody with a terminal disease will decide to do something about them. It's a shame really, but I feel that is what is going to happen someday

How?
Vietnam Veterans of America and I believe the Hell's Angels (maybe some other club) stepped up and said they would maintain a perimeter.
That just keeps them at a distance.
It's the Patriot Guard. and they are brillant in their dealings with them. They understand the psychcology and know exactly how to deal with them.
Although, a Hell's Angels' "Altamont-esque" incident might be pretty effective as well, if not at least hugely satifying

They are a great bunch. If this non-sense ever goes on in your area it may be worth it to spend the day with them. The welcome everyone with or without a bike. I met up with them at a funeral in the Catskills a couple years ago and it was a great time.

Seriously... He was a delegate for Al Gore's Presidential election.. Run for several offices in Kansas as a Demcrat.. Even ran a pretty effective campaign for the Senate as a democrat... and is VERY active in the democratic party around here...
Like I said... I have had many face to face encounters with this lowlife.. unfortunately I know all to well who he is...
Maybe "crazy lunatic" is a more fitting description.. But people assume that he would lean to the Right... and it simply isn't true.. Probably unwise for me to have brought it up... But whatever...
If he was a right winger... the left would make sure the right wing owned this clown... but he isn't.. So instead they try and push their own screwed up clowns off onto the right...
It is BS and I am tired of it..
Still to this day the Guy is a registered Democrat...

The Patriot Guard is AWESOME...
I try and join and them out whenever I can... They put on this awesome show of force escorting a National Guard unit off to the airport the other day... Totally awesome...

I think most people assume that he is a lunatic and as such don't care what his political leanings are.

instead, they're trying to passively leave it as 'implied.'
With some soldiers returning suffering from PTSD, plus http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/01/11/national/main6083072.shtml (unfortunate fact, higher suicide rates)
I am quite surprised that there hasn't been a soldier returning that decided to take as many of them with them as possible.
That said, it is a show of the integrity and honor of our troops that it hasn't happened yet.
I think it goes a long way that the common publick knowledge is more aware of the mental stresses.
not acknowledging it at all, as in the past, i'm sure exacerbated the problem alot.
